Activity: Youths for SDGs 2021: Online Edition

The Y4SDGs was held online for the first time in its history in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant that my very first Y4SDGs conference will be not as fun as how it might be physically.

The whole event was a challenge for me. I first had to coordinate with my friends and teachers to prepare myself to make the most out of the conference. My friends, Jiwon and Paree, helped me a ton as they had experience with Y4SDGs.

Throughout the event, I realized what my strengths and weaknesses were. For strengths, I could come up with a solution to a global issue that seems promising. However, I had trouble building on the idea that I suggested, which I realized is a weakness of mine. With help from other participants, I was able to get some practice on building ideas and coming up with realistic ways to implement my and other's ideas. It was great to get help from every participant whenever I was stuck.

The global issues that we tackled throughout the conference helped me realize that a minor inconvenience for me can be a huge issue for others. Such realization gave me the motivation to push through even when I met an obstacle that seemed really challenging.

Cas Outcomes:

1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

Activity: 2020-2021 Business Club

For the academic year of 2020-2021, I participated in the Business Club led by Ms.Lee, who is an IB Business Management teacher, and other student leaders.

The club focused on running our own businesses in Wells in order to try and make profit. The club was like a practice for real life scenarios. By running a business within school, we could gain experience about running a business outside of school.

The club worked on many business opportunities, such as selling masks or collaborating with other clubs to sell the club's merch. The work was divided into different groups, such as promotion, connection, etc. By working together, we could support each other with areas that individuals could lack in and give feedback to each other.

The main challenges throughout the club were making sure that we have a good profitable model for the businesses we did in our school. It was really difficult to make the prices reasonable while still maintaining the quality and making profit. We concluded that we should only earn the minimum amount of profit available, which helped us keep the prices low. But in a real life business model, this might be an ineffective model as profit level would be too low.

The club was overall really enjoyable to be part of. The club was challenging which motivated me to try even harder, and I enjoyed my time working together with my friends.

CAS Outcomes:

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

Activity: 2021 IB ShowCAS performance

For the 2021 IB ShowCAS, the Korean Club decided to perform 4 songs for the audience attending the showcase.

I personally don't feel confident in dancing, so if I had to be honest I wasn't looking forward to the practice sessions that we were going to have. But once we began practicing and getting prepared, the sense of accomplishment soon took over my unwillingness and I was looking forward to performing in the IB ShowCAS.

It was difficult to practice during the exam weeks as well. We had exams coming up to practice, so all time we had was during free blocks and after school. Even then, some of us were not free because they had immediate tests coming up.

In the end, we put out a performance that we were satisfied with.
