Alumni Video Project

Investigation:

Video editing has been one of my top interests in my life. I was always fascinated at how video editing helps raw footages look more interesting, informative, fun, understandable, etc Because of my interest, during my classes if I had the option to do a project or an assignment by a film-related means, I would always choose that option and enjoy my time planning, filming, and editing videos. When Dr.Katina asked students that are willing to participate in the Wells Alumni Video editing, I knew that it would be a perfect opportunity for me to practice a different kind of video editing, a kind that I never got to try out before. This opportunity was also an opportunity for me to improve my video editing skills, as Mr.Jess and Dr.Katina, who are both experienced with filmography and video editing, offered to provide feedback and constructive criticism to the videos that the students made.

Preparation:

Dr.Katina and Mr.Jess had first begun dividing the work to the students that were willing to edit the Alumni videos. We only had 2 students total, me and So Yoon, who is my friend in my grade. Dr.Katina had shared with us a timeline and a plan for who will be working on which alumni and until when we will have to finish editing the videos. I have been practicing with a new open-source video editing tool named 'Davinci Resolve' and I was confident that I am ready to start editing with the new video editing tool.

Action:

After I had received the raw footage from Dr.Katina and Mr.Jess, I started to edit the footage. Mr.Jess had provided us with editing formats we can use to introduce the alumni's names and the questions the school had asked them during the interview. Some problems that I ran into were not having images that I can use to give a visual aid to the alumni's interviews and having trouble with picking the right music that is copy-right free. My solutions were looking at the online CAS portfolios of the alumni as well as the Wells Photography Club google drive and looking at YouTube Music to find copy-right free music. After I had done those my editing was all about adding footage together and adding transitions between the footage.

Reflection:

The video editing process was overall fun. The satisfaction I felt after I finished an alumni's video and saw that the video is uploaded on the Wells YouTube channel was really great. However, as I got to see the videos uploaded I realized some flaws that I could fix and also realized that the format of the videos is not really unionized. I think I can fix this next time by making notes of all kinds of things used in a video format such as font, text size, text position, transitions used, etc. As I finished this project I felt that I gained valuable experience for video editing and was motivated to keep going for more.

CAS Outcomes:

1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
