Week 8: March 30th - April 3rd
Monday: Students began reading Excerpt 4 on Frederick Douglass' Narratives. This begins on page 41 and we read to page 45 of their Unit 2 Workbook. Digital copy is available here and to the right. We answered all Second & Third Read Questions as we went.
HW: AOW #6, "The Distracted Teenage Brain" is due on Friday.
Tuesday: As a class, we continued reading Excerpt 4, pages 49-51 and pages 57-62. We answered all Second and Third Read Questions.

Wednesday: Students began working on their Essay Planner. We will continue working on the Essay Planner tomorrow.

Thursday: Students should continue to work on the Frederick Douglass Essay Planner. These are due Friday, 4/3 by the end of the day!

Friday: Final workday for the Douglass Essay Planner. Students should turn in their AOW #6 by the end of the day too.

Week 7: March 9-13
Monday: NO SCHOOL! TEACHER WORKDAY
Tuesday: We will start Unit 2 of Module 3 and get our new workbooks. We then began reading Excerpt 3 of Frederick Douglass' Narratives. We completed the Second and Third read questions together as we went along.
HW: AOW #4: Letter from Douglass to Tubman is due Friday. Read your Book Club novel! Our next discussion will be Friday.
Wednesday: We continued our close read of Excerpt 3 and worked through the second & third read questions. If we finish, students responded to Douglass' Purpose on page 27.

Thursday: Students took the 7th Grade Performance Assessment in the morning. For Core 3, students had Digital Portfolio work-time to add an artifact from Quarter 3 and reflect on their learning experience.
HW: AOW #4 is DUE TOMORROW! We will discuss Book Club novels section 3 tomorrow. Make sure you have read and are ready to discuss.
Friday: Students turned in AOW #4 and received AOW #5. We then met as Book Clubs from the third section of their novels. With any time remaining, we began Excerpt 4 of Frederick Douglass' Narratives.

Week 6: March 2-6
Monday: Students were introduced to the Freedom Summer of 1964. We then created a Theme vs Central/Main Idea Anchor chart for their notes. Students then began working on the Poetry Stations. Groups had 12 minutes for the first couple of stations. We will continue with the Poetry Stations tomorrow.

Tuesday: As a class, we created a tone vs. mood anchor chart. Students continued with the Poetry Stations from yesterday. We took note of the figurative language, rhyme, repetition, and rhythm of each poem and answered the questions associated with each of the poems after Marking it up.

Read your Book Club novel, second section of reading! Discussion #2 is Friday.
Wednesday: Students finished up remaining Poetry Stations and we debriefed as a class. Students practiced with the Quizizz. Students then took the Poetry Quiz to check for understanding of the five poems.
HW: Tomorrow is the End of Unit 1 Poetry ASSESSMENT! To prepare, students can review "How to Mark a Poem" that is posted for them on Google Classroom. AOW #3 is due tomorrow!
Thursday: Students turned in their AOW #3 before taking the End of Unit 1 Poetry assessment in class. When they finished, they had time to read their Book Club novel.
HW: Be ready for Discussion #2 tomorrow!
Friday: Students were assigned AOW #4 - this will be due next Thursday, 3/12. Book Clubs then met for Discussion #2 on their Book Club choice novels. With time remaining, students read the next section of their novel.

Week 5: February 24-28
Monday: Students wrote Constructive Response #2 on Excerpt 2 of Frederick Douglass' Narrative. After writing, students had time to begin reading their Book Club novel. Book Clubs met for the first time to determine a reading schedule. Book Club will meet the next four Friday's to have discussions about each part of the novel.
HW: Continue reading your Book Club novel. AOW #2 is due on Thursday this week!
Tuesday: Students were introduced to Found Poetry, before attempting to formulate their own Found Poem based on Excerpt 2 of Frederick Douglass' Narrative. Students chose 15-20 powerful words or phrases from excerpt 2 that exemplify and support Douglass' position that slavery was horrific and support his purpose of educating those who did not comprehend the system of slavery in America.

Wednesday: Students practiced the Quizlet set to begin to get ready for their Vocab Quiz next week for Unit 1. Students took their powerful words & phrases from yesterday and formed their own Found Poem. Final copies were written not in pencil and included decorations of some sort related to their poem. All Found Poems are due first thing tomorrow. With any time remaining, students read their Book Club novel.
HW: Finish the final copy of your Found Poem. AOW #2 is DUE TOMORROW!
Thursday: Students turned in their Found Poem and AOW #2. Students were introduced to figurative language with the Quizlet and YouTube Review and we introduced our poetry toolbox for Unit 1 Poetry.

Friday: AOW #3 was officially assigned. Students then met with their Book Club for the first time today on the agreed upon first quarter of their Book Club novel. Groups posted to the Flipgrid on "identity". After discussions, students continued analyzing Excerpt 3.

Week 4: February 18-21
Monday: No School! President's Day
Tuesday: As a class, we introduced the Article of the Week. Students received a paper copy but can also use the link to complete digitally if they prefer. We reviewed Excerpt 1 from Douglass' Narratives from before track-out. Students then worked on Constructed Response #1, citing evidence from the text and explaining their reasoning.
HW: AOW #1 is due Friday.

Wednesday: Students reviewed the Power of Music with African spirituals, as Douglass discusses life as an enslaved person heavily in Excerpt 2. Students began reading Excerpt 2, Paragraphs 1-4, and filled out their Shine Light Note Catcher. Students were assigned their Book Club Books. Please see the Book Club document if you are interested in purchasing your Warrior their own copy of their Book Club novel.

Thursday: Students viewed the "Life on a Southern Plantation Video" before continuing with Excerpt 2, paragraphs 5-7, and completed 2 more quotes on their Shine Light Note Catcher.

Friday: Students turned in AOW #1 before working on their Constructed Response #2. Students met with their Book Club for the first time and made their Reading Schedule. We will have Book Club Discussions each of the next four Fridays. Students had the remainder of the period to read!

Week 3: January 21-24
Tuesday: Students created a timeline of Frederick Douglass' life as a warmup. As a class, we read the "Renaissance Man" text in their ELA workbooks together. Students then read the "Renaissance Man" reading individually and answered the text-dependent questions. We watched the "Biography of Frederick Douglass" with time remaining.
HW: Finish Renaissance Man questions in ELA workbook if not done.
Wednesday: As a class, we attempted to identify Douglass' purpose in writing his Narrative. We read the first excerpt (paragraphs 1-3) from the Narrative together, and students were introduced to the "Shine Light" Note Catcher that we will be using moving forward. Students then completed an analysis of paragraph 5 from Excerpt 1 on their own, after a first read together.
HW: None!
Thursday: Students were introduced to the Frederick Douglass One Pager, in which students were asked to research Douglass' life and experience further, before sharing all their research and knowledge to this point. Students had the entire class period.
HW: None - unless you absolutely HAVE to work further on the One Pager. Students will have tomorrow to finish the One Pager but this must be done by the end of the class period, tomorrow!
Friday: Students continued their work on the Frederick Douglass One Pager - these are due at the END of class. Students received their assignment for their Module 3 Book Club book (students had ranked their Top 3 choices last Friday - if you would like to purchase their own copy for them, you can, but I will have copies for them to begin reading when we return from track-out).

Week 2: January 13-17
Monday: Students completed a Warm-up on vocabulary that will be used the remainder of this Unit. Students then worked on a visual discovery of images from the antebellum South and slavery in America. With the remainder of class, we read the "Slave Trade" excerpt from A History of US. Students viewed a brief overview video on King Cotton and the cotton economy of the American South.
HW: None
Tuesday: Students built on what we did yesterday, performing a Close Reading of the "Abolition" text. With a partner, students answered the text dependent questions that followed.
HW: Finish the questions in workbook on "Abolition" text if not done, pages 14 & 15. Mid-Unit Assessment tomorrow! This will be very similar to what we have done Monday and Tuesday. We will be assessing how well students read with depth and explain their thinking.
Wednesday: Students took the Unit 1 Mid-Unit Assessment in class. With the remainder of the period, students were introduced to their independent reading novel choices.
HW: Parent Letter to be returned by Tuesday Students should also complete their Book Choice form and give to me tomorrow.
Thursday: Students began the ELA Benchmark Assessment. Students were sent home with the Letter to Parents concerning the mature content of some of the novel choices. If there is a novel you do not want your Warrior reading, please fill out the letter and return to me. Students also received a "Book Choice Form" for them to determine which novel they performed.
HW: Parent Letter for Independent Reading novel choice DUE by Tuesday. Bring a novel to read for after the ELA Benchmark Assessment!
Friday: Students finished the ELA Benchmark Assessment from yesterday. Students were sent home with the Letter to Parents concerning the mature content of some of the novel choices. If there is a novel you do not want your Warrior reading, please fill out the letter and return to me. Students also received a "Book Choice Form" for them to determine which novel they performed. Students had Independent Reading time once they finished.

Quarter 3, Week 1: January 6-10
Monday: Students were introduced to Module 3, which focuses on word choice and what makes stories powerful. Students chose their One Word for 2020, and we discussed the difference between connotation and denotation. Students then completed a word choice activity to practice with connotation.
HW: None!
Tuesday: Students practiced banishing boring words, to shift to using powerful words instead. Students then completed the Hershey Kiss Challenge using Descriptive Writing. With time remaining, we worked on Show, Don't Tell sentences.
HW: None!
Wednesday: Students completed a warm-up about what makes certain stories so powerful. We then took background notes on folk tales before reading "The People Could Fly" together as a class.
HW: None!
Thursday: Students continued our analysis of "The People Could Fly" from yesterday. We compared and contrasted the written version to an oral tradition version.
HW: Powerful Story Note Catch
Friday: Students completed a Gallery Walk about words related to race and racism. We asked students to share how comfortable they are discussing race, racism, and issues related to race. We had a discussion about what these words meant, and why we should have these courageous conversations.
