Wherever possible, synagogues face the city of Jerusalem. Jews ensure they are facing Jerusalem when they are praying. This reminds Jews of the Temple. Synagogues are still built so they face Jerusalem, and they contain many symbols and reminders of the Temple itself.
When the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, more synagogues were built.
They set up synagogues so they would not be dependent on the Temple in Jerusalem.
Most Jews choose a rabbi or join a more structured community to help them observe their religion.
Synagogues have two purposes:Â
they are places where Torah is taught
they are places of worship outside Jerusalem
