Sin

Failure to live the covenant-that is, to follow the mitzvot- is called sin.

For Jews, sin involves not only deliberately going against moral laws, but also violating the ritual or purity laws. 

Sin is seen as the main obstacle to living the covenant. 

It is a break in the relationship with God, a breaking of the covenant.
