In science class, we learned about cells and how they work. We learned about Robert Hooke and the three parts of Cell Theory. We also learned about microscopes, the different parts of a microscope, and how to use them safely. I learned how to calculate magnification and find the real size of a cell. We also learned about different parts of a cell, such as the nucleus, mitochondria, and vacuoles. We compared plant cells and animal cells and learned how they are different.
We used a microscope to look at onion cells. We drew what we saw and labeled the cell wall and nucleus. It was interesting to see real cells instead of just pictures in a textbook. We also looked at animal cheek cells and compared them with onion cells. We saw that plant cells have a cell wall, but animal cells do not. We did a celery experiment to learn about osmosis and diffusion. We saw how water moves through a plant and learned about the xylem.
I would like to learn more about medical science. I want to learn how cells can get sick and how this can affect our body. I also think it would be interesting to learn how doctors and scientists study cells to help people.
I found a few things difficult in science. I had trouble remembering the names and jobs of the organelles. The math problems were also sometimes confusing, especially when finding the actual size of a cell. Using the microscope and getting the cells in focus was also hard sometimes😭. To improve, I will use flashcards to study the organelles and practice matching each organelle with its function. I will also practice using (MY OWN) microscope by starting with the lowest power and slowly adjusting the focus. If I still do not understand something, I will ask my teacher for help.
There are several improvements I could make to my portfolio. First, I could improve my onion cell drawing by making the labels clearer and adding more details that I actually observed through the microscope. This would make the drawing easier to understand. Second, I could improve my microscope lab by using the microscope more carefully so nothing bad happens again 😅. Third, I could improve my celery experiment by explaining the results more clearly. I could include more details about how the water came up to the leaf and show more details. I think these changes will make my portfolio show more of my understanding instead of only showing the final results.🤌
One thing where I have grown is studying for science. At the beginning, I sometimes tried to remember information without practicing it enough. I have learned that I understand science better when I study a little at a time instead of waiting until the last minute. I plan to improve this habit by studying my notes for a few minutes each day. I will also practice at least a few science problems before a test so I can find out which topics I still need help with.
One piece of feedback I received (from my friend) about my celery lab was that I should improve my science work by adding more detail to my explanations. This feedback helped me realize that making my work clearer and easier to understand will help the teacher and my friend understand it better.
Overall, I learned a lot about cells, microscopes, and how cells work. The labs helped me understand the topics because I was able to see closely at real cells. I also learned that I need to practice difficult topics instead of giving up when I do not understand them right away. In the future, I want to continue improving my science study habits, make my lab work more detailed, and learn more about medical science and how scientists study cells to understand diseases.
