Plastics and microplastics (150–200 words)
The most important fact I learned about plastics and microplastics is that they never truly disappear; they just break down into smaller and smaller pieces that spread everywhere in the environment. Before this project, I thought plastic trash was mainly a problem we could solve by picking it up from beaches or recycling. Now I understand that once plastic enters nature, sunlight and waves fragment it into microplastics that are too small to see but easy for animals to swallow. These tiny particles have been found in ocean water, soil, air, and even inside human bodies. They can carry toxic chemicals and move up the food chain from plankton to fish and finally to us. This changed how I see everyday objects like plastic bags and bottles, because each one has the potential to become millions of microplastic pieces that last for decades or longer. Realizing how permanent plastic pollution is makes me feel more responsible for reducing my own plastic use.
Biodiversity (150–200 words)
The most important fact I learned about biodiversity is how deeply all species are connected in ecosystems and how losing even a few can destabilize the whole system. Before this project, I mainly thought of biodiversity as just “lots of different animals and plants.” Now I understand it more as a web of relationships where each species has a role, like a producer, consumer, decomposer, or pollinator. When one species declines or disappears, it can affect many others that depend on it for food, shelter, or reproduction. For example, if pollinators such as bees decrease, it impacts flowering plants, which then affects herbivores and the predators that eat them. I also learned that healthy biodiversity makes ecosystems more resilient to changes like climate shifts, diseases, or natural disasters. This idea of resilience stood out to me: diverse ecosystems can adapt and recover better, while simplified ones are fragile. Knowing this makes me see conservation not just as “saving cute animals,” but as protecting the complex systems that support human life, including our food, water, and climate.
