Have you noticed that emotions are a lot like the weather?
Like the weather, our moods are always changing
Good days and bad, sunshine and rain
This concept is called Emotional Weather, have you heard of it?
No?
Well I hadn't either, but I read about it and it really made me think about my feelings
If you think about regular weather, like sunshine, most people LOVE sunshine and soaking up warm rays on the beach or at the park, and many people really DON'T like the rain. Especially if I'm stuck inside, and I get really nervous if there's thunder and lightning too!
When the thunder is very loud, sometimes I get consumed with worry, and I even forget what sunshine feels like
But imagine if every time there was a storm, or a hint of rain, I locked up inside my house and hide under the covers. Then I wouldn't be able to function!
You could also say the same thing about emotional weather.
Some days I feel on top of the world - happy, motivated, and loved!
Cool as a cucumber
Just like sunshine weather!
Then, other times I'm consumed by my negative thoughts and feel worthless, overwhelmed and worried.
But, stormy days come and go, for instance, I thought I'd never get over it when my favorite neighbors moved away
It took weeks, maybe a few months, for me to warm up to the new folks who moved in.
But eventually, we struck up a great friendship. Now I can't imagine the neighborhood without them!
I know it doesn't always seem like it, but believe me, the sun will come out again soon
Both in a metaphorical sense and literally.
Even with the loudest thunder and the darkest of nights, the sun will still rise in the morning.
Basically, our negative thoughts and feelings will eventually lift, and we can step back into the sunshine
Sometimes, things like the weather are out of your control, and you just have to ride it out.
A lot of the time even when you weather a really bad "storm" you get a nice surprise when the clouds lift
When I begin to recognize how this kind of weather affects me, I can get what I need to ride it out, just like a rain jacket or an umbrella, we all need tools to help us.
So what can help you ride out an emotional storm?
Write down a few things you think will help you, such as:
-Talking to people
-Getting some exercise
-Meditation
-Reading a good book
While you're at it, do you notice any patterns for when the storm clouds start rolling in?
Reflect on how you're feeling, even just a minute or two a day can make a big difference in being mindful and recognizing these things before they become overwhelming
You might even start to detect clouds on the horizon before the storm builds, and use your tools to take a different path
