Working with a group of Ukrainian refugees, conducting research in the group, I was convinced that they were experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, stress, a feeling of isolation and loneliness. Against the backdrop of war and constant bad news, it is very difficult to stay calm and solve important life issues and even learn a new language.
There is need a for help that gives people strength, helping them regain control over their lives and contribute to their own healing process.
For sessions, I found a permanent room, which was provided by Apex Falcontis and Peter O’Grady - Food for All Charity
The room is located in the centre of London.
The project exceeded all expectations. Participants participated in the sessions with enthusiasm, there were tears, laughter, discoveries and confessions. I saw that with each session they opened up more and more and became more confident.
Together, we learned to enjoy life again!
The participants received knowledge and tools that will help in developing resilience and coping mechanisms in everyday life.
As can be seen from the research of Luscher tests, as well as from the evaluation form and video feedback from participants, the program has fully completed all the tasks that it was assigned.
Participants found solace and companionship in the group, breaking the cycle of isolation. The sessions also indirectly benefitted their families by improving interpersonal relationships and emotional dynamics.
Beyond immediate emotional relief, the project empowered participants to envision and pursue personal development goals. One participant was inspired to enrol in a psychology program, aiming to help others as she had been helped.
Participants developed a deep emotional connection to the project’s venue, treating it as a sacred space for healing and reflection. Many brought gifts such as candles, incense sticks, and decorative items to contribute to the atmosphere. This reinforced the venue’s role as a sanctuary for inner peace and discovery.
Participants consistently expressed appreciation for the meditations tailored to each session. These meditations, crafted by me specifically designed to align with the goals of each workshop, enhancing focus and relaxation.
The monitoring and evaluation processes provided invaluable insights into the impact of the "Art Overcome Trauma" sessions. A key tool used throughout the project was the Luscher colour test, administered at the beginning and end of majority session.
An unexpected and valuable outcome of the Luscher test was its immediate impact on participants’ self-awareness. The process of completing the test allowed them to reflect more deeply on their emotions and states of mind. One participant shared, “I never used to choose black. It was always at the end, as though I avoided it. Now I’ve come to see it like all other colours—it has its right to exist.”
This revelation highlights how even the act of participating in evaluation tools can foster meaningful change. Going forward, I will incorporate this insight into programme planning, using evaluation tools not just for data collection but as opportunities for self-discovery and empowerment.
This project has had a transformative impact on participants, providing a crucial step in overcoming depression, managing stress, and fostering self-discovery. I witnessed remarkable growth as individuals blossomed before my eyes, regaining confidence and learning to see a more positive outlook on life.
