For this on campus event, we are exploring the three major mathematical of notions of geometry, probability theory and arithmetic in a series of activities and presentations. These are very versatile theories that are incredibly useful even when we least expect it.
Join us for a magical presentation, which combines all three in fun ways in order to create magic tricks. Then, we see all the ways we can tile a floor with tiles of a given shape. In the process we will explore a very recent result in maths- can we tile a table with a single shape that is not a regular polygon (like a square or a hexagon)? Finally, we will discuss the Monty Hall paradox-a famous counter-intuitive result in conditional probability - can be understood from a TV show of the seventies.
If your student group has not previously visited us, we are happy to ensure that a campus tour is included in the day.
