Entrevista

Victoria Merino, profesora del Departamento de Biología-Geología en el IES Al-Qázeres, tuvo el gusto de concedernos una entrevista. Aunque actualmente ejerce como docente, dedicó una etapa importante de su vida a la investigación, realizando la tesis doctoral en el Instituto de Bioquímica Vegetal y Fotosíntesis del CSIC en Sevilla. Completó su formación predoctoral en el Instituto Max Planck en Tübingen (Alemania), y trabajó en su etapa final investigadora en el Departamento de Genética de la Universidad de Sevilla. Por ello, hemos querido tener una conversación con ella; saber un poco más acerca de su trabajo y experiencia y descubrir de dónde viene su pasión por la Ciencia.

Victoria Merino, who is a teacher of the Biology-Geology at the IES Al-Qázeres, has had the pleasure to give us an interview. Although she is currently working as a teacher, she dedicated part of her life to research, doing the doctoral thesis at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen (Germany) and, in her last reserach stage, she worked at the Genetics Department of the University of Sevilla. That is why we wanted to have a conversation with her; to know about her job and experience, and where her passion about sience comes from.

¿A qué edad te empezaste a interesar por la Ciencia?

At what age did you interest in Science?

Me empecé a interesar por la Ciencia cuando era pequeña, ya en el colegio. Me encantaba mirar todo lo que encontraba por el campo en un microscopio rudimentario que teníamos en casa. Ya en el instituto consolidé mi interés por la Ciencia, principalmente por las asignaturas de la rama científica, como Matemáticas o Biología.

I started interesting in Science when I was young, already at school. I enjoyed having a look on a rudimentary microscope I had at home at everything I found at the countryside. My interest in Science was strengthened during highschool, since I mainly liked science subjects such as Maths or Biology.

¿Qué carrera estudiaste? ¿Qué otras opciones tenías?

What degree did you study? Which other options did you have?

Estudié Biología porque era la carrera que más me gustaba ; conocer la vida y su desarrollo. Mi otra opción era Matemáticas, pero los números no me apasionaban tanto como el conocimiento de la vida.

I studied Biology because it was the subject I liked the most; learning about life and its development. The other option I had was Maths, but numbers did not please me as much as knowledge about life did.

¿Cuándo decidiste que querías dedicarte a la enseñanza?

When did you decide you wanted to become a teacher?

Realmente la enseñanza es algo que ha estado siempre acompañándome en mi vida. De pequeña jugaba a ser profesora; de adolescente explicaba a mis compañeros de clase y de mayor, nunca lo descarté. Enseñar a los demás conocimientos de la vida es algo maravilloso.

Al terminar la carrera decidí que quería hacer un trabajo de investigación en el CSIC, por mi necesidad de investigar y conocer el mundo de la investigación. Pero, unos años más tarde, decidí que lo que realmente completaría mi vida sería transmitir todos esos conocimientos que había adquirido durante mi vida a los jóvenes. Fue entonces, hace 5 años, cuando abandoné la carrera científica y comencé a dedicarme a la enseñanza.

Teaching has always pleased me. Being a child, I played pretending to be a teacher; being a teenager, I explained things to my partners, and I never discarded it when I had already grown up.

When I finished the degree I decided that I wanted to do a research work at the CSIC. I needed to investigate and to know about the research world. However, a few years later, I realised that what would fulfill my life would be to transmit to young people that knowledge I had acquired troguh life. It was then, 5 years ago, that I abandoned the scientific career and started working as a teacher.

¿Qué aprendizaje obtuviste del tiempo que pasaste investigando en el laboratorio?

What did you learn while researching in the lab?

Principalmente he desarrollado la capacidad de pensamiento y de razonamiento en mis trabajos científicos. En la ciencia es un constante preguntarse 'por qué', y hay que estar continuamente pensando qué puedes hacer para responder a la pregunta.

También aprendí autonomía en el trabajo; además, la organización, el compañerismo y la colaboración son importantes, porque el trabajo colaborativo es fundamental.

I mainly developed the ability to think and explain my research projects. Studying science implies constantly asking 'why', and one has to be continuously thinking what to do in order to answer that question..

I also learnt how to work autonomously; besides, organization, team spirit and collaboration are important, sice collaborative work is a fundamental aspect.

¿Qué investigación/es realizaste en ese tiempo?

What did you investigate?

Me he dedicado a la investigación básica, aquella investigación que descubre el funcionamiento de los seres vivos. Estudié acerca de las proteínas que mantienen unidas las células de unas bacterias fotosintéticas filamentosas, y cómo estas proteínas formaban unos pequeños canales que permitían la comunicación entre las células facilitando el intercambio de sustancias.

Más adelante, estudié mecanismos de expresión genética en Salmonella, la bacteria causante de la salmonelosis.

I have focused on basic research, which the one that concentrates on the functioning of living beings. I studied about proteins that keep together the cells of fillamentous photosynthetic bacterias, as well as how these proteins form smal channels that allow the exchange of substances.

Later, I studied the mechanisms of genetic expression in the Salmonella, which is the cause of salmonelosis.

¿Ha tenido alguna vez algún problema por ser mujer científica?

Have you ever had problems for being a scientific woman?

A lo largo de mi vida no tuve problemas científicos, aunque de algún modo influyó en el momento en el que quería ser madre. Muchas veces esperas a terminar proyectos para tener un hijo, o realizas experimentos con radiactividad y trabajas con productos químicos que no se recomiendan al estar embarazada, de modo que tienes que parar tu experimentación.

I've never had problems for being a scientific woman, but somehow influenced me when I wanted to be a mother. In many occassions, you wait until a project is finished to have children, or experiments with radiactivity and chemical products that are not recommended while being pregnant, so you have to stop experimentation.

¿Qué opinión tienes del papel de la mujer en la Ciencia?

What do you think about the woman's role in Science?

Creo que el papel de la mujer ha sido importante a lo largo de la historia de la Ciencia; grandes científicas han contribuido de manera muy importante al conocimiento del ser humano en diferentes campos, como en Biología y en Medicina, y cada vez es más reconocido su papel en la historia de la Ciencia.

Actualmente la presencia de mujeres en la Ciencia es cada vez mayor. Existen muchos laboratorios donde mayoritariamente trabajan mujeres y comienzan a estar presentes también en cargos directivos de gran importancia, tradicionalmente ocupados por hombres.

I believe it's been an essential role along the history of Science; they have contributed to the knowledge of the human being in different fields such as biology and medicine in a very important way , and it has been more recognized.

Currently, women's presence in science is greater and greater. There are many labs in which mainly work women, and they have started to occupy managerial postions of great importance that were traditionally occupied by men.

En la enseñanza, ¿has observado diferencias entre hombres y mujeres? ¿Y en los departamentos de Ciencias?

Have you observed any differences between men and women teaching? And in Science departments?

En mi experiencia, no he observado ninguna diferencia entre hombres y mujeres. El trato es el mismo, el respeto es mutuo y el trabajo en equipo es total.

Actualmente, son muchas las mujeres que se dedican a la Ciencia, siendo en muchas ocasiones incluso mayoritarias. Además, vivimos en un lugar cada vez más concienciado en la igualdad y la tolerancia.

In my experience, I haven't observed any differences between men and women, even being majoritary in many occassions.They are treated the same way, respect is mutual and team work is total.

Currently, there are many women who dedicate to science; this means that females have been the majority in many occassions. Besides, we live in place that is more concerned about equality and tolerance.

¿Volverías a trabajar en un laboratorio si tuvieras la oportunidad?

Would you work in a lab again if you had the chance?

Me encantó mi etapa científica, descubriendo y conociendo diferentes modos de pensar, pero no, no volvería a trabajar en un laboratorio. Es una etapa de mi vida que me ha ayudado a formarme y evolucionar como persona y de la cual me siento muy orgullosa, pero, hoy en día, me siento plenamente satisfecha con la educación.

I loved my scientific stage, discovering different ways of thinking but I wouldn't work again in a lab. It's a life stage I'm very proud of that has educated me and has helped me to evolve as a person; however, nowadays, I'm fully satisfied with teaching.

¿Qué le dirías a tus alumnas para animarlas a estudiar carreras de Ciencia?

What would you tell your female students to encourage them to study Science?

Deben pelear por lo que les gusta, tienen que luchar por sus sueños y tenemos que recorrer un camino juntas que cada vez es más fácil para nosotras. No te miran por ser mujer; te miran por los aportes a la ciencia que realizas y por tu implicación y sacrificio.

They should fight for their dreams; we still have a long way to go which, fortunately, is becoming easier for us. People do not focus on you for being a woman; they focus on you for what you contribute to science with, your implication and sacrifice.
