In PKSC 3680, also known as Packaging and Society, this course dives into packaging sciences role in today's society. Throughout the course, we learn about the ramifications that packaging can have on the environment. In this course we learn about how packaging technologies such as plastics were first being developed, the scientists behind these first plastics were not taking into account the life cycle of these plastics and where they would end up after they had fulfilled their purpose. Because of this, there are heaps of plastic waste that sits in landfills or on a large island made entirely out of garbage floating somewhere in the middle of the pacific ocean. These discarded plastics also negatively affect wildlife as animals will eat this plastic waste thinking it is food which will ultimately lead to them getting sick or passing away from the ingestion of plastic products. From this class, we learn about the past of plastic development so moving forward we know which plastics are better and more sustainable for the environment so we are able to product plastic products that are either completely environmentally friendly or not as harmful to the environment. This class helped provide me with a better insight as to how our field of study impacts the world around us and how we need to ensure that when we graduate are in the industry, we are making well informed and educated decisions always considering any possible consequences and who it may affect.
