In PKSC 2010, also known as Packaging of Perishable Products, this course covers the fundamental characteristics and applications of various materials and systems used to packaged perishable products such as goods and pharmaceuticals. This course also goes on to discuss the packaging issues regarding food, pharmaceutical, and medical packaging. During this course we also went on to learn about the various product/package interactions and the packaging requirements to address basic theory in food and pharmaceutical protection. This class was a little bit challenging for me as this class, to me at least, was a combination of organic chemistry and packaging science. During this course I had to put extra effort into it as to make sure I fully understood the lecture material and so that I could do well on the exams. For a class that is known by many in the major as having to be retaken at least once, I felt very proud of myself for passing this class on my first go at it. This course reminded me that putting in the extra effort does pay off in the end.
The artifact chosen for this class is a paper on some of the major and most recent food and drug recalls. It was with this assignment where I learned about some of the biggest recalls in the U.S. and what caused them. It was very interesting doing the research for this assignment because seeing why the recall happened and the subsequent effects it had on the market is quite fascinating. From reading about these incidents and recalls, you can see a direct effect on the market each of these recalls and how companies made changes to ensure something like this would happen again.
