September 2024 Edition
With the school year already off to a great start, allow us to reintroduce ourselves. Around here, we’re known as the Viking Village Volunteers. You might have known us in a past life as the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), but our mission remains the same: to support the education and engagement of our students at Whittier Elementary. How do we do that? By creating and fostering relationships with school staff, parents, and caregivers, along with other people and businesses in our amazing community.
Learn more about us and our mission at Viking Village.
We welcomed all new kindergartners with a Whittier Viking t-shirt as a way to make them feel special and part of the school community right from the start. This year, we donated 70 shirts to this year's kindergartners. Welcome to Whittier, little vikings!
We’d like to send a big thanks to Wepa Cafe in Garden City for their donation of $402.52 from our restaurant FUNdraiser on September 3. We hope you all enjoyed their amazing Puerto Rican cuisine!
Last year, we raised $1,200 through restaurant fundraisers and need your help to beat that number this year!
When you order from a participating restaurant on the day and time of the fundraiser, the restaurant donates a portion of their sales to Whittier. We will have one FUNdraiser every month, so be sure to check out the upcoming events (and when you order during the event, let the cashier know you’re there for the Whittier FUNdraiser!).

We’re elated to report that last year, we sponsored 22 staff grant requests totaling nearly $4,500. This year, we aim to provide even more support to our staff with $9,000 available for the 24/25 school year. If you know a Whittier teacher or staff member who is in need of financial support for a project, supplies, or even a field trip, please pass along this link to the brief application: Whittier PTO Grant Request Form.
If you’re interested in contributing funds so we can continue to support the Whittier staff in this way, there are several ways to donate (and your donations are tax deductible!). See Viking Village: Donate for more information.

Join us at the Whittier soccer field on Saturday, September 28 from 9 to 3 pm for our 3rd annual Whittier Fútbol Club Jamboree!
150 kindergarten through sixth grade students have practiced hard all month and would love your support in cheering them on for their games.
Feel free to bring the whole family. We promise to have something for everyone. There will be music, food trucks, soccer (of course!), and more.
A big round of applause for the 14 families who volunteered to keep the garden running through the summer!
We would love to have more volunteers help in the garden.

Head on over to Staff & Teacher Wish Lists for grade-level wish lists along with wish lists from other support staff and everyone’s favorite drinks and snacks!
We’re going to keep these lists up through the year, so feel free to come back at a later date and see what things our teachers and staff might need.
