October 2024 Edition
This year's STEAM Night was an incredible success, drawing in over 700 students and parents for an unforgettable evening of learning and exploration!
The event brought Whittier families together to dive into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, featuring hands-on activities and exhibits from more than 20 community partners.
A special shoutout to Dr. Galaviz (Title 1 Interventionist) for her continued leadership in making STEAM Night a beloved annual tradition. Thank you for lighting the spark year after year! And thank you to all the volunteers who contributed in bringing STEAM night to life! We couldn’t have done it without you.

Get ready for our second annual Be The Change event! From November 4 through 14, we ask students to reflect on how they can be the change not only at Whittier but also at home and in their communities. Students are asked to share their thoughts on sticky notes which we’ll post on a board near the school entrance.
But that’s not all! Students can bring in spare change and join the school-wide fundraiser to help raise money for a silent disco! Ready for the bonus? The two grades that collect the most spare change get to choose one "wild" thing for Principal Flock (and maybe even a teacher!) to do. Will the class spray paint Principal Flock’s hair like last year, or will they choose something equally creative like a water balloon toss or a choreographed dance routine? Only time (and December’s newsletter) will tell!
We started this year with $9,000 of grant money for the 24/25 school year, which leaves us with $8,000 waiting to be used! If you know a Whittier teacher or staff member who is in need of financial support for a project, supplies, or even a field trip, please pass along this link to the brief application: Whittier PTO Grant Request Form.
If you’re interested in contributing funds so we can continue to support the Whittier staff in this way, there are several ways to donate (and your donations are tax deductible!). See Viking Village: Donate for more information.
The sun shined down on 150 students as they played in the 3rd annual Whittier Fútbol Club Jamboree in September, and oh the fun they had! They worked hard and built skills and resilience the month leading up to the jamboree with weekly soccer practices led by our amazing teacher and community volunteers.
We’d like to thank teachers Hannah Velikoff and Lauren Barraza along with the Victorino family for their continued support of this amazing program every year. Thank you for sharing your love of soccer with our students!

For parent tech conferences, we treated the staff to a delicious dinner from Cafe Zupas with a sweet touch and generous dessert donation from Jimmy John’s.
Thank you to Jimmy John's General Manager Bradley Aguilar and his team for their support in making the evening a little brighter for our amazing teachers.
We are thrilled to introduce a new initiative for our community: Viking Village Gifters! This special space within our Facebook group is designed to bring families together by making it easy to share and receive items. Whether you have gently-used items to give away or you're on the lookout for something specific, Viking Village Gifters is the perfect place to exchange and support each other.
We invite all families to join in and make the most of this exciting new resource! To take part in this amazing exchange, join our Facebook group, Viking Village Volunteers (PTO).
Have you been wondering how you can help make a difference for students and staff at Whittier? Look no further! We would love any support you can provide, or if you’re interested in either the Secretary or Vice President position, let us know, or join us at our October 30 PTO meeting at 4 pm in the library!

We’re going to keep these lists up through the year, so feel free to come back at a later date and see what things our teachers and staff might need.
