Supreme Folly - July 3
The United States Supreme Court ended its current session with a flurry of decisions that were contemptuous both of the common good and of democracy itself. Over the last couple of weeks, SCOTUS paved the way to an American dictatorship, ordered a radical re-ordering of the US separation of powers, discarded the ban on bump stocks, continued its assault on the right to vote, and left the door open to ending emergency abortions.
Time to go, Joe - July 4
Last week's disastrous debate had its expected effect on the poll numbers. Six weeks ago, seven states were considered toss-up in the Trump-Biden race. One of those, North Carolina, is now considered "leaning Trump". Of the remaining six toss-up states, Trump has increased his lead in all but Nevada. The chance of a Biden victory in November is becoming increasingly lower. Biden and the Democrats have six weeks to come to their senses and prevent a second disastrous Trump presidency.
Summer Break - July 7
What in the World? is on Summer Break from July 8 through August 14. A few things to especially keep an eye on over the coming month..."The War on Gaza", "War Criminal Invited to Address Congress", "Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Protesting the New Nuclear Arms Race", "The Democratic National Convention"
What this Uncommitted Voter wants to see at the Democratic National Convention - August 16
The Democratic National Convention starts Monday in Chicago. Regaining the support of the Uncommitted Voters will be critical to Harris's chances to overcome Trump's lead. To do so, she must make a complete break with Biden's genocide-abetting policies. Hubert Humphrey went down to defeat in a similar scenario in 1968 because he waited too long to distance himself from LBJ's Vietnam policy. Let's hope Kamala Harris does not make the same mistake...platform policies the Democrats should adopt to regain the confidence of the many Arab-American, young, and progressive voters and voters of color - the Uncommitted who may not show up in November because of Biden's Gaza policies
DNC falls short on Gaza as the genocide continues - August 23
15,000 protesters took to the streets of Chicago during the Democratic National Convention to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza. For the most part, their pleas fell on deaf ears. The Dems capped their dismissal of the Palestinians' plight by rejecting a request for a Palestinian-American to address the convention. Meanwhile the genocide continues with US bombs and weaponry. As Secretary of State Blinken agrees to Israeli ceasefire demands that the Israeli negotiators know are non-starters for the Hamas negotiators, the Palestinian death toll tops 40,200, people are going hungry, a polio epidemic looms, and Israel expels thousands from a former "safe zone", disrupting the Gaza Strip's last aid hub,
Two months from today... - Sep 5
On November 5, Americans will go to the polls to elect the President, the members of the House and 33 of the nation's 100 Senators. Democrats have 23 Senate seats to defend; the Republicans, just 10. Can Harris's momentum overcome Trump's earlier lead? Can the Dems gain control of the House and retain control of the Senate? Where things stand two months before the election...the states to watch, the threats to a free and fair election, a refresher on the electoral college
Harris "won the debate." So what? - Sep 11
I couldn't get through five minutes of the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump debate. On the first question, Harris missed an opportunity to highlight the Biden-Harris Administration's economic successes and Trump was his usual self. Pundits generally agreed that Harris won the debate but we'll have to wait for the polls to tell us whether any undecided voters were moved to support her. Let's not forget that Hillary won the debates against Trump in 2016 but still lost the election. As for Harris, she fell notably short on two issues - immigration and the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
Sudan peace talks breakdown - Sep 17
As much of the world's attention focuses on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, a third war is causing untold misery in Africa. Like those two more prominently followed wars, the civil war in Sudan is rife with death, displacement, hunger, attacks on civilians, and war crimes. Last month another attempt at a negotiated settlement failed with the Sudanese government delegation notably absent from the US-brokered talks.
World reacts as Israel expands its war to Lebanon - Sep 26
Israel followed up last week's deadly terrorist "pager attack" on Lebanon with an intensive bombing campaign. On Monday, Lebanon suffered its highest single-day death toll since the end of the Lebanon Civil War in 1990 as Israeli raids killed more than 500 people and wounded thousands. On Tuesday, world leaders gathered for the United Nations General Assembly condemned Israel’s assaults on Palestine and Lebanon. With the risk of a regional war growing, France and the United States are leading the effort to obtain a 21-day ceasefire along the Lebanon-Israel border.
Voting in the swing states 2024 - Sep 30
After historic voter turnout in the 2020 election, baseless allegations of voter fraud and election irregularities sparked an unprecedented wave of legislation that made voting harder. A look at the new voting restrictions and election interference laws put in place in the 7 key swing states and how Nebraska might be the difference maker in 2024
