Melanie Safka's active musical career spanned just four or five years. After she performed at Woodstock in 1969, "Melanie" became the female voice of the "hippie-wing" of rock 'n' roll.
Melanie, Donald Trump and I all grew up in the Borough of Queens at almost exactly the same time. I never met either of them. It's a shame that more than 70 million Americans subscribe to Trump's toxic worldview rather than the beautiful worldview of this nearly-forgotten singer.
