Rationale
Over the course of the year, I have learnt many different things, such as, how to write a song and also learnt a lot in production. I have also done this in many different styles. For example, I have learnt how to use and program a synth and wrote my own song using this skill, and I have also written and recorded a rock song with my classmates for project 2. For this reason, I would like to use everything I have learnt for project 5 and create an EP with several different styles in it.
Project Concept
For my project, I am aiming to create and EP that I will name "The Styles", which will include tracks of different styles, ranging from 80s pop to indie rock. I will be doing with my classmate Freya, as we both have very similar tastes in music. We are aiming to include at least 4 tracks with the genres, Piano Ballad, 80s Pop, Indie Rock and Acoustic Pop. However, if we get time to add more, then we will.
In terms of research, we will look into several different songs from the different styles mentioned above (plus a few more, in case we get time to write more) and look at what elements they use to make the songs sound like the respective styles. For example, are there certain instruments used, certain chord progressions that are popular, etc. We will then try and make our own songs using the evidence we have found.
For the final form, we would love to make a physical product that can be sold, however, in the given time frame, I don't think this will be possible. So we would at least like to have some form of album art so the we can release the EP to Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, etc and maybe take it to a physical form sometime in the future. This means we will need to look into how to make album art as well by maybe talking to someone we know who studies photography or is a photographer.
Evaluation
To evaluate my work, I will be producing a weekly journal to keep track on everything I have completed and if I have completed everything I set out to do for that week. I will document all decisions made and progress made in these entries via text, videos and audio clips. There will also be mid term meetings to ensure we are all up to speed and aren't falling behind.
Project Plan
By the end of week 1, I would like to have completed all of the initial research I need to start the project. Obviously, I will do more as I need it but for the start of the project I need to at least look into several different songs in the styles that I am wanting to write in. This will give me the information I need to get started on writing music.
By the end of the second week I would like to have got an idea for at least one of the songs on the EP. I wont have written the full song yet and wont have done any recording for it, but as long as there is an idea to build upon, more ideas will come flowing in.
By the end of the third week I would like to have the first song written but not recorded in the studio. I will need to have the song recorded in some way but just not a professional studio recording just yet. I would also like to have got an idea for the next song on the EP so that I can start building on this in the next week.
By the end of the fourth week I would like to have a second song written and ready to be recorded. It is also time to start working on making a website, Instagram page, YouTube Channel, Twitter, etc. I will need to have all these ready to create and EPK.
By the end of the fifth week I would like to have finished my EPK and have all photos, info and social medias present in it. I would also like to start coming up with ideas for the third song on the EP and hopefully be able to get this one written before the end of the sixth week. I will also need to start coming up with ideas for album art for the EP as I would like to release the EP on music streaming platforms, which means having some good art will catch the eyes of people and make them more likely to listen.
By the end of the sixth week I would like to have the third song written and ready to be recorded and would also like to have an idea of how the fourth track is going to sound. I need to start getting ready to get all the songs recorded as well, so anything I am not too sure about in terms of production I either need to do the research during this week or get classmates to teach me anything they know.
By the end of the seventh week the fourth song needs to be completed and ready to be recorded. This will conclude all writing of music and I can move onto the recording of all the songs that I have written. This means I will need to organise any studio time I need. I can use my own studio for most of it but for certain parts I will need to use the more advanced studio in college (for example, any drums I need to record for the indie rock track as I don't have a real drum kit).
By the end of the eighth week I will need to have at least two of the songs recorded and mixed. I may need to do a bit of research into mixing and mastering to complete this as my knowledge on the subject is fairly limited.
By the end of the ninth week all songs need to be recorded mixed and mastered and ready to be shown off the people for feedback. I will also need to put the EP together along with the album art I made earlier and start to get them release ready. I may need to look into how to release music onto Spotify and Soundcloud as this is something I have not done before. I do, however, already have knowledge on how to release something to YouTube already.
