Task 1 - Research

Task 1 is the research task. In this task we will focus in on a particular single, EP or album. We will look at what instruments are used, how they are produced, how they were recorded (live or multitrack). We will then use one of the songs for task 2 where we will try to recreate it exactly.

Instrumentation

There are many different sounds and intruments within this song. They are as follows:

• Guitar (this is the main instrument of the song)

• Guitar solos

• Guitar slide

• Bass Guitar

• Drums (electronic)

• A lot of synths all doing different things.

• A lot of backing vocals to form a choir

• Main lead vocals

• Bird sounds

• Lo-fi elements

• Guitar turned into atmospheric pads (only in the YouTube version, this got removed upon the Spotify release)

List of Equipment

• The guitar of choice for this song was the Fender Telecaster. Instead of running it through an amp first he plugged the guitar straight into his audio interface which looks to be a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4.

• The bass guitar he uses for the track is a Hofner HI series

• The synth that was used the Behringer Poly D

• The drums were done electronically through Logic. He never stated which drum preset he was using so I'll have to find one that sounds as close to the original as possible.

• The Lo-fi elements also came from Logic and again he didn't see which one he was using.

• His microphone of choice looks to be a Warm Audio WA-47. He uses this for all the vocals in the song but used his phones microphone to record the bird sound that can be heard at the beginning.
