Task 4 - The Comparison

Guitar

The guitar in the original had a much richer sound than the one in my track. I could possibly have got the sound of mine closer, had I known the amp settings or different effects Blanks used on his, however this isn't something that he ever spoke about.

I could use a different microphone on the amp to achieve a closer sound as well. The reverb I used on the guitar was also quite a way off the original. The reverb Blanks used was very wide and rang on for a long time, but didnt compramise the sound of the actual guitar. The reverb I used made the guitar sound a little bit thin and it let through too high end.

I think the guitar in mine had a similar amount of low end as the original, however, mine could have done with more mid range tone and less high end.

Drums

I managed to find the exact same drum preset that Blanks used on his recording. This means, in terms of sound, my drums were practically identical. The crash is really wide with plenty of bright, high end tone and a nice steady attack. The snare had a sharp attack and the bass had a nice low end thud.

The only thing that differed between the two was the production. Blanks' track had a filter on the drums as they came into the breakdown, whereas mine didn't. I did put some reverb on mine, however, this doesn't sound the same as the reverb on the orginal, which gave the drums the feeling of being played in a huge arena.
