St. Paul's University College offers residence, academic courses, and learning opportunities to students at the University of Waterloo. We are affiliated with the University and are located on its main campus.
St. Paul's purpose is to support the University of Waterloo community by providing a unique learning environment that educates social innovators to shape a just and humane world.
University of Waterloo courses are taught at St. Paul's, including courses in International Development, the Master of Development Practice program, Indigenous studies, Human rights minor, Religious studies and Canadian studies.
The Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre is also located at St. Paul's.
Many Waterloo students – both undergraduate and graduate – choose to live at St. Paul's. Some come here for the community, some for the learning experience, and some to be part of special opportunities like the Environment Living-Learning Community, the Women in Engineering Living-Learning Community, or GreenHouse.
St. Paul’s is a not-for-profit university college affiliated with University of Waterloo and located on its main campus. We serve the University of Waterloo community by:
Teaching and providing support for Waterloo courses, including the International Development and the Master of Development Practice programs.
Providing residence to students of all faculties, including live-in programming such as the Environment Living-Learning Community, the Women in Engineering Living-Learning Community and the International Engineering Living Community. We also offer a French-language residence floor.
Providing a social impact incubator program for upper-year undergraduates: St. Paul's GreenHouse. Students – under the guidance of professional mentors – conceive of projects that create environmental or social impact change and implement them, even as they continue their studies.
Offering modern, on-campus apartments, private rooms, and suites for graduate and upper-year students.
Providing the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre, which facilitates the sharing of Indigenous knowledge and provides culturally relevant support services for all members of the University of Waterloo community, including Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, staff, and faculty.
People are sometimes confused by the term "college" and how it relates to the University of Waterloo. "College" in this context does not mean "community college," but rather a small teaching and living environment within a larger university.
Local members of the United Church of Canada, Waterloo Presbytery, established the College in 1962 to contribute programs and a student living-learning community to the new University.
Today, St. Paul’s operates independently of the United Church as a legacy corporation – meaning there is no formal or legal relationship. However, we continue to express our founding values through our mission to educate social innovators to shape a just and humane world. We are committed to the value of learning in community, and to responsible service and respect for other cultures as critical marks of the educated citizen.
Our College is situated on lands deeply connected to Indigenous peoples who have historically lived, and who currently live, in this territory. We recognize that these lands have always been the source of learning for Indigenous peoples. As an educational institution, we are committed to respecting the traditional knowledge that Indigenous peoples have derived from these lands and learning from their experiences on them.
Founded by the United Church of Canada in 1962, St. Paul’s University College is now a secular institution affiliated with the University of Waterloo. All our students are University of Waterloo students. St. Paul’s contributes to the University of Waterloo by offering academic programming reflective of our mission and values; by providing an enriched living environment for both graduate and undergraduate students; and by hosting unique co-curricular programming for University of Waterloo students such as GreenHouse, the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre, and the Student Refugee Program.
We consider our student body to include any Waterloo student who: lives or has lived at St. Paul’s; is enrolled in one of our academic programs; or is a participant in any of our co-curricular programming.
Our faculty and staff embrace the values of the College and work hard to support and advance its mission.
Our alumni network includes all former students who either lived at the College or graduated from one of our academic programs. These alumni serve their professions and their communities with distinction and many give back to the College as volunteers, board members and donors.
To inspire a life-long love of learning and a profound commitment to social responsibility.
The shared values that guide our College are:
Integrity and Respect
Justice for Indigenous Peoples
Intellectual Curiosity and Rigour
Community and Collaboration
Diversity, Inclusivity and Belonging
Sustainability and Stewardship
By 2030, the College will have:
A national reputation for excellence in select academic areas
A more engaged and diverse residence community
A fourth major co-curricular program
Stronger engagement of upper-year students
Upgraded residence wings and additional academic space
An enhanced profile on the broader campus
