In this benchmark, we were introduced to the laser cutter and assigned to create a self portrait of ourselves made out of paper.
This is a design I found online. I felt like it was a good mix between simple and difficult which makes it unique. Once folded, you can really see all the small details like the head being able to turn 360 degrees while staying on the body, to the legs and face being overlapped with parts.
I wanted to use the original design as nothing more than a base to create my version of myself. By using an old original character I created, I simply removed most of the facial features and hair to add my own features and aesthetics.
In Illustrator, it was pretty simple using the pen tool to go over everything and knowing where would be cut and where would be folded. I did find some original cuts in the arms and neck to be unnecessary to I removed them to clean up the finished design once cut.
Loved how the final piece turned out. ont of my few notes would be to add either weights at the bottom of the feet, or remove some weight from the hair, since i added two layers of hair so the back part is also black instead of white. Turned out exactly how I envisioned so im pretty happy of how it turned out.
