November 9-12, 2023 -- East Coast Yoga Therapy Course: Yoga Therapy for Osteoporosis, Headaches, Insomnia, TMJ Dysfunction
The purpose of this course is to educate the Yoga Therapy student on basic pathology, presentation, signs, and symptoms related to common health issues. The conditions that will be discussed are those that may be encountered by the Yoga Therapists in a Yoga Therapy setting, including insomnia, headaches, osteoporosis, and temporal mandibular joint dysfunction. The course will also highlight management and Yoga Therapy strategies for clients presenting with these conditions.
This course will also present to Yoga Therapy student the yoga perspective on the conditions of the mind and the emotions and the role of Yoga Therapy. This course presents how as the Yoga Therapist gathers information during the assessment to develop an appropriate practice for the
client, the mental and the emotional state of the client should be considered. The course presents the connection between the mind, emotions, and the body and how to explore methods to step back from constant thoughts, images, and internal commentary through asana, pranayama, meditation, nutrition, prayer, mantra, mudras, visualization, applied yoga philosophy and lifestyle changes.

Students will also be instructed how to reference current healthcare information and to refer their clients to healthcare professionals related to common health issues beyond the scope of Yoga Therapy protocol.
Students will be guided in assessment techniques related to the common health issues discussed in this course. Students will learn how to integrate the information from the intake, assessment, and observation to develop a working assessment of the client’s condition, limitations and possibilities.
This course will guide students in many practical foundational skills necessary for safe and effective Yoga Therapy sessions for issues related to the common health issues discussed in this course within the scope of Yoga Therapy. This course will demonstrate how the information gathered during the assessment is used to guide the development an appropriate Yoga Therapy sequence for the client, using the proper yoga tools and techniques. This class teaches how to implement effective teaching methods, how to transmit self-awareness and self-responsibility to the client, and how to develop and adjust the protocol strategies for the client. The course presents methods to implement necessary strategies to provide instruction, education, and methods to help the client remember his/her practice.
The course provides laboratory time for students to participate in role playing or using volunteers with therapeutic conditions related to common health issues to help prepare the student for hands-on client experience. Lab time may include settings where the students observe the instructors of the program performing the assessment and designing the Yoga Therapy program. Students will experience and facilitate all assessment techniques taught and then sequence a Yoga Therapy program based on the assessment. The Yoga Therapy sequence may include asana, pranayama, meditation, nutrition, prayer, mantra, mudras, visualization, yoga philosophy, or focus on lifestyle changes, depending on the mutual goals of assessor and client. During labs, lead instructors will move through the classroom to observe students’ knowledge and understanding. Instructors provide students with feedback when they have performed assessments and created a Yoga Therapy sequence.
During this course, a three-part class will be presented on working with Group Yoga Therapy Classes. Group Yoga Therapy classes consist of students with therapeutic conditions. The first part of this class focuses on instructing the ECYT students on the need to individualize for students within the Group Yoga Therapy Class. ECYT students will receive instruction in how to choose and prioritize the use of Yoga Therapy tools and techniques appropriate to the needs of the clients as well as techniques to address the specific needs of the individual participants.
The second part of this class includes laboratory time where ECYT students observe an ECYT lead instructor teaching and guiding an actual group of students in an ongoing therapeutic class setting. ECYT students will have the opportunity to observe the lead instructor guiding the class as a group, and individualizing practices for particular students.
