The Village of Rutland experienced torrential rainfall during the night hours of September 20-21, 2026, resulting in severe flooding throughout the community, primarily along Depot Steet, Main Street, Martin Street, North Main Street, and Salem Street, resulting in an inundation of flood waters in several basements of residences and businesses, with a number of residences and businesses experiencing flooding on the ground floor.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2026, severe thunderstorms producing three to five inches of rainfall overburdened local streams and watercourses, all of which had elevated water levels due to previous rainfall earlier in the day on September 20, 2026.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2026, the Fire Department was dispatched to commence water rescues in both the Village of Rutland and Rutland Township. The Public Service Department and Mayor's Office began advising residents along Salem Street to begin evacuations.
By approximately 4:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2026, the majority of Depot Street, Main Street, Martin Street and Salem Street were under water, with flood waters inundating the truck bays of the Fire Department.

During the afternoon and evening hours of September 20, 2026, the Police Department, Public Service Department and Mayor's Office began an initial assessment of civilian safety to ensure those directly affected by flooding had adequate food, water, medications, and operable medical supplies, such as oxygen. The initial assessment additionally evaluated if any person directly affected by flooding required relocation to an emergency shelter. The initial assessment found no injuries or fatalties of persons, and no person requested relocation to an emergency shelter.

The Village of Rutland is partnering with the Meigs County Health Department in the distribution of 25 blessing baskets that contain supportive and prevention items that help give relief to the effects of COVID-19. A basket may be obtained from the Rutland Civic Center / Village Hall every Monday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Village of Rutland is taking steps to assist businesses and organizations within the community to prevent the spread of COVID-19. More than $4,400 has been appropriated from the Coronavirus Relief Fund to purchase hand hygiene supplies and personal protective equipment for businesses and guests.
