Domain 2
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
As a student teacher, I have learned that creating a supportive and safe learning environment is crucial for students' well-being and academic success. The second domain in Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers emphasizes the importance of establishing positive relationships with students, respecting their diversity and individuality, and promoting their protection and well-being.
In my observation, I have noticed a shift in behavior and learning environment in schools, which makes this domain even more important. When teachers create a supportive and safe learning environment, students are more motivated, engaged, and confident in their learning. They are also more likely to be respectful, responsible, and cooperative with their peers and teachers. On the other hand, when teachers fail to create a supportive and safe learning environment, students are more prone to stress, anxiety, boredom, or frustration in school, and they may also be more likely to misbehave, experience conflicts, or become victims of bullying.
As a student teacher, I value this domain highly and put it into practice in my classroom. For instance, I greet my students warmly, use their names, show interest in their lives, interests, and opinions, and provide positive feedback and encouragement. I also respect their cultural backgrounds, beliefs, gender, and preferences and differentiate instruction and assessment to meet their diverse needs and abilities. Additionally, I establish clear rules and expectations for their behavior, use positive reinforcement and logical consequences, and employ a variety of methods and materials to engage students in learning.
