The Earth Science curriculum builds on the natural curiosity of students.  By connecting them to the beauty of geological history, the amazing landforms around the globe, the nature of the sea and air, and the newest discoveries about our universe, students have the opportunity to relate to their everyday world.  Students explore topics such as fundamentals of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy; Earth’s minerals and rocks; Earth’s interior; plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the movements of continents; geology and the fossil record; water and atmosphere; the solar system and the universe; energy and resources.

Earth Science Honors is a rigorous course that fosters critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  Students explore topics such as fundamentals of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy; Earth’s minerals and rocks; Earth’s interior; plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the movements of continents; geology and the fossil record; water and atmosphere; the solar system and the universe; energy and resources. Students in Earth Science Honors use high level thinking skills to complete lab reports, participate in class discussion boards, and complete engaging and rigorous projects.

SCI07A/B Summit Life Science VA 

Life Science invites students to investigate the world of living things – at levels both large and small – by reading, observing, and experimenting with aspects of life on Earth.  Students explore an amazing variety of organisms, the complex workings of the cells, the relationship between living things and their environments, and discoveries in the world of modern genetics.  Practical, hands-on lesson activities help students discover how scientists investigate the living world.  Students perform laboratory activities and a full unit on investigation to learn about the application of scientific methods.  Students study a variety of topics in Biology, including the chemical building blocks of life, fundamentals of Ecology and life’s environments, the biology of organisms from bacteria to mammals, the life processes of plants, the variety of cell structure and how cells perform the tasks necessary for life and fundamentals of genetics.

Life Science Honors is a rigorous course that fosters critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  Students investigate the living world and study a variety of topics in Biology, including the chemical building blocks of life, fundamentals of Ecology and life’s environments, the biology of organisms from bacteria to mammals, the life processes of plants, the variety of cell structure and how cells perform the tasks necessary for life and fundamentals of genetics.  Students in Life Science Honors use high level thinking skills to complete lab reports, participate in class discussion boards, and complete engaging and rigorous projects.

SCI08A/BE3 Summit Physical Science VA 

Physical Science is the study of chemistry and physics. Students study matter, atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, motion, force, work and machines, energy, waves, electricity, light, and other aspects of chemistry and physics. At the end of this course, students will take the Science 8 Standards of Learning (SOL) test to demonstrate their understanding of Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science.

SCI08A/BE3 Summit Physical Science VA 

Physical Science Honors covers the same content as Physical Science with the addition of extension and enrichment activities. Students in Science 8 Honors use high level thinking skills to complete lab reports, participate in class discussion boards, and apply physics concepts in problem solving.  At the end of this course, students will take the Science 8 Standards of Learning (SOL) test to demonstrate their understanding of Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science.
