ENG06A/BDE4 Language Arts 6 VA
The ELA 6 course helps students improve reading comprehension with a variety of literary works, both fiction and nonfiction. Students also develop stronger writing skills and are compelled to think analytically as well as creatively, by completing assignments such as short answer responses related to a novel and writing their own narrative essay that shows an understanding of literary devices. Finally, students interact and participate in Class Connect sessions where teachers instruct and assess knowledge on SOL related content through student participation and short assessments. It is a challenging course which prepares students to become more analytical and inspired readers and writers.

ENG06A/BDE4 Language Arts 6 VA
The ELA 6 Honors course is a challenging and fast-paced course with rigorous coursework. Students will have opportunities to complete assignments that encourage higher level thinking such as analyzing, evaluating, and creating. While ELA 6 Honors covers the same content as ELA 6, students are provided more opportunities for in-depth exploration of literature. Students will conduct research and complete presentations. During Class Connect sessions, students will have more time for collaboration, discussion, and inquiry. The Honors course provides an excellent opportunity for students seeking a more rigorous experience in English and Language Arts.

ENG07A/BDE4 Language Arts 7 VA
In ELA 7, students continue to develop comprehension and analytic skills in both informational and fictional texts. There is an ongoing emphasis on reading strategies. Students express themselves by practicing the form and structure of various genres of writing, further enhancing their communication skills. Students study a variety of media to understand informational and persuasive techniques, explicit and implied messages, and how visual and auditory cues affect messages. Grammar, usage, and mechanics skills are deepened. Students continue to widen their vocabulary and apply acquisition strategies.

ENG07A/BDE4 Language Arts 7 VA
In ELA 7 Honors, covers everything included in ELA 7 with opportunities to engage with more rigorous passages and concepts. A second semester culminating project will center around student evaluation of their schooling and their role in their education. After taking into consideration factors like the history of U.S. education, equity in the classroom, and the impact of virtual education, Honors students will create a visual presentation on the design of their ideal school.

ENG08A/BDE4 Language Arts 8 VA
The ELA 8 course focuses on the interpretation of literary works and the development of written communication skills in standard (formal) English. Course units are composed of lessons related to literary analysis, composition, grammar, and vocabulary. Students engage with a variety of texts including short stories, poetry, drama, novels, and nonfiction and will write at least two formal essays over the course of the year. This course addresses critical thinking in assessment standards.

ENG08A/BDE4 Language Arts 8 VA
The ELA 8 Honors course covers everything included in ELA 8 with additional enrichment opportunities provided through a more advanced range of texts. Students read multiple novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction texts throughout the school year, and will have opportunities to discuss their thoughts with their peers in an academic forum. Students also write in a variety of formats including essays, short stories, speeches, and multi-media presentations.
