What SOL tests do students take in middle school?
*Please note if your student did not take civics in 7th grade, they will take it in 8th grade.
How can I help my student prepare for the SOLs during the school year?
Attend class connect sessions. Ensure your student not only goes to a class connect, but is an active participant and engaged.
Develop independent problem-solving skills. Encourage your student to go over ways to solve a problem with you and try out their own solutions.
Students MUST learn to solve problems independently, Be there to support their choices and go over why something did or did not work.
Use and encourage excellent problem-solving strategies that focus on a growth mindset, listed to the right.
SOL test scores and credits
Students must answer approximately 60% of the questions correctly, in order to earn a passing score. A failing SOL score does not mean the student fails the grade – Virginia does NOT have a “pass to promote” policy. The low score is, however, an indicator that the student has not mastered the grade level standards. Each test is scored separately. Formal score reports will be sent out at the end of June.
