Honors Courses
Students may qualify for honors in one, two, three or all subject areas.
To determine course placement and eligibility for honors, students will undergo an annual academic review. Factors considered include but are not limited to prior course grades/progress, assessment scores (including course placement tests), engagement and compliance in schooling, and teacher recommendation.
Students must qualify each year to remain in honors for each subject area. If a student previously completed an honors course and does not qualify for the subsequent honors course, the student will complete the traditional course offering.
Students who do not qualify for honors one year may qualify for honors the next year.
Students who are recommended for honors may opt to complete the traditional offering instead.
No quality points (additional 0.5 credit) are awarded for honors courses; however, students will receive the honors notation on report cards.
Students who begin an honors course and wish to be removed may drop the course in early fall.
VAVA Middle School administrators reserve the right to modify student course placement at any time during the school year based on course grades/progress, assessment scores, engagement and compliance in schooling, and teacher recommendation.
The main differences between honors and standard courses are rigor, pacing and expectations.
Students enrolled in honors courses for Math 8, Algebra 1, Geometry, science, social studies or ELA will utilize the same course and cover the same Virginia Standards of Learning as students enrolled in the traditional course offering. The honors courses, however, will include enrichment activities and additional enhancements designed to challenge advanced learners.
Math 6 Accelerated and Math 7 Accelerated courses are provided in place of Math 6 Honors and Math 7 Honors courses. Students who complete the sequence of Math 6 Accelerated and Math 7 Accelerated will cover all Virginia Standards of Learning for Grades 6 through 8.
