This phase focused on understanding the role of sustainable and resilient cities in response to rapid urbanisation. Through literature review and case study analysis, we examined key principles of sustainable urban development, including resource efficiency, compact urban form, green infrastructure, public transportation, and waste management. The study explored different typologies of sustainable cities and assessed their social, economic, and environmental performance, with particular attention to urban resilience against natural disasters such as flooding. These investigations formed the basis for addressing what defines a sustainable city, why sustainability is critical for future urban living, and how cities can adapt and remain resilient in the face of environmental challenges.

This individual phase explored ideas for future sustainable cities by translating sustainability concepts into speculative urban scenarios beyond 2050. Key environmental, social, and infrastructural challenges were identified and projected into the future, forming the basis for strategic responses. These ideas were communicated through visual narratives such as infographics, sketches, and digital graphics. The phase concluded with a reflective writing exercise, linking the learning outcomes of the module and assignments to future architectural practice.
