To be licensed in Illinois with a Professional Educator License (PEL) in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, you must pass:
ILTS 206 – Early Childhood Content Exam
✅ Passing Score: 240
ILTS 305 – Elementary Education Content Exam
✅ Passing Score: 240
✅ Your score must be sent to NLU (select NLU as your university when registering).
To begin your linked placement Practicum and Student teaching, you must earn a score of 220+ or higher on at least one of the two required exams; the ILTS 305 or ILTS206 exam.
This must be done by a specific deadline based on your start term and ILTS score reporting dates.
Your Advisor and Licensure Officer will remind you of this deadline, and it is also available in the ECL Major Handbook.

Start preparing for your exam by using the Discover Course for Content Test Prep - a comprehensive, self-paced online study course to help you prepare for your content test!
The Discover Course is a free tool within D2L. There are no deadlines, and you can work at your own pace.
ECL Students should complete both the ECE & ELE Discover Courses.
Self-register for the course and access the materials for as long as needed.
The Discover Course contains multiple general resources for the content test, modules detailing specific testing strategies, and plenty of example questions.

Scroll down to IL305: ILTS Elementary Education OR IL206: ILTS Early Childhood Education and click on it
Click on "register now" then sign in
Click on “Check seat availability”
Follow the rest of the prompts accordingly to find you preferred testing site
⚠️ Important: Select NLU as your university so your official score is sent directly to your student file.
*After you register for the test, you will have access to a free practice test. Registration does not require selecting a test date, and you can test up to one year after completing registration.
How to Access Your ELE #305 / ECE #206 Practice Test:
When you register for the content test, you will be given access automatically from your account to an online practice test.
This practice test includes selected-response questions and constructed-response assignment(s), if applicable, representative of the actual test and the following features:
Taking the Practice Test:
You'll have 120 days to access your practice test, starting from the activation date.
Each practice test includes field-specific directions similar to the actual test.
Questions may include graphics, audio materials, and writing assignments, as appropriate.
You can pause the test and return to it later; it doesn't have to be completed in a single session.
Your practice test can be submitted for scoring once, but it will be available for review until the end of your 120 day subscription period.
After submission, you'll receive immediate objective-level performance results on multiple-choice questions, along with explanations for correct responses.
Practice tests with written assignments include sample responses for comparison.
Students who meet any of the following criteria are eligible for accommodations during their test:
Students with disabilities
Students for whom English is not a primary language
Nursing mothers
Students requesting accommodations must:
Register for the test and pay the fee.
Submit a completed Alternative Testing Arrangements Request Form and any additional documentation required.
Wait to receive approval on your request. Most students receive an update on their request within 3 weeks of submitting the paperwork.
Once approval is received, students can select the date/time/test center and finalize registration for the test.
Note: Pre-approval is required BEFORE the test day or the center will not honor the alternative arrangements.
