Social Justice & Human Rights - Independent Bookstore - Multicultural and Cross-Cultural Context - Focus on Middle-East and Africa; Social Engagement and Human Rights; Afro-Italian Community
Libreria GRIOT is an independent bookstore located in Rome, Italy. Founded in 2006, GRIOT is the only Italian bookstore specialized in sub-Saharan African and Afrodiasporic literature. During little more than a decade it has grown to become an important hub for novelists, scholars, activists, and readers interested in the African continent. In addition, a section of its vast catalogue is dedicated to writings from/about the Middle East and Islamic cultural worlds.
Libreria GRIOT offers a wide range of activities to its customers: language courses (Amharic, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Swahili, Wolof, Persian, Egyptian and Tunisian dialects), creative writing workshops, music classes, concerts and, obviously, book presentations. The latter are a staple of Rome’s cultural life, having hosted leading authors such as Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Igoni Barrett, Maryse Condé, Hisham Matar, Felwine Sarr, Taiye Selasi, and many more.
Alongside foreign writers, we are very interested in the promotion of an emerging Afro-Italian literature, and we are proud to support the (cultural) struggles of second-generation immigrants in an increasingly hostile country. Over the past decade GRIOT has hosted several university students interested in learning how to manage an independent cultural center through an internship tailored on their skills and objectives.
