Arts & Design - Creative Art Start-up - Peer Connection - Community Engagement
CASTRO (Contemporary Art Studios Roma) is a project founded to support Italian and foreign young artists, curators and researchers. Castro promotes an experimental, versatile and highly collaborative learning model for members of the local community, as well. Each year, the projects hosts 6 artists and 2 curators under 40 who are selected by an international jury. These are called abitanti. The Study Program dedicated to abitanti offers study visits, tutorials, guided tours and a blog. The Public Program takes place in the CRIT Room and offers free CRITs, workshops, round tables, meetings and seminars on contemporary art.

"This Fall I interned at CASTRO, a Contemporary Art Studio which is a short but beautiful walk from campus, on which I spent many an afternoon and evening taking in the views and reflecting on my experiences in Rome as I traveled to and from school. [...]
In my time as an intern, I assisted with several projects, from copy editing soon to be published magazines, to transcribing lecture series’, to developing visual aids for business proposals. Half of my time was spent helping out with the setup, running, and takedown of CASTRO’s many wonderful public events. This was perhaps my favorite time that I spent there.
I got to listen in on an incredibly interesting series of seminars focusing on the subject of radical pedagogy in art education, which really opened up my mind and led me down several fascinating rabbit-holes about the art world in the recent past. I enjoyed working with the people at CASTRO. They are all very kind and easy to talk to, even as a non-Italian speaker!
I really enjoyed my time there this past semester, and I would encourage anyone who has aspirations to work in the art world to consider this opportunity to see a new side of it." (L.C., Fall 2021)
“CASTRO is the perfect internship to find a balance between immersion in culture and engagement in the professional world, all while being in a friendly and relaxed environment.
CASTRO is a contemporary art studio space in which artists may work for a determined amount of time and engage in talks, workshops, and events to further their artistic growth. CASTRO also holds events open to the public to engage the community in conversation about contemporary art. As an intern at CASTRO, I was able to participate in every aspect of this process.
I helped make social media posts, review the English on newsletters, funding applications, information given to artists, etc. I also helped in researching funding opportunities and gallerists and art professionals. Gaia, as well as Serena and Giulia, were wonderful to work with and very easy to communicate with. They always made sure I understood what was happening and checked in with me often.
Anyone interning would benefit from making an effort to be friendly and connect with the people you meet at CASTRO because they are all very interesting people and will bring an extra level to your own interning experience. I have only positive things to say about CASTRO and I think it is truly a valuable experience, especially for anyone who really wants to learn about the professional art world, as Gaia is very passionate about it and really wants you to engage in it.” (D. C., Fall 2019)
