We were tasked to design a holistic adventure trail programme for kids under 8 years old to encourage parent child interaction. Our office is not in the main building of Science Center, instead, it is in another building near by. Science center KidsSTOP™ is where science befriends and transforms the minds of millions. Their mission is to promote interest, learning and creativity in science and technology, through imaginative and enjoyable experiences, contributing to the development of Singapore's human resource.
In Singapore, many people realise the problem of lack of parent child interaction. Hence, we want to create a adventure trail which encourages parent-child interaction. Visitors will explore KidsSTOP™ gallery grounds and utilise the exhibits to learn about science through meaningful play in a self-directed manner. Our main focus is to develop a Holistic adventure trail booklet and resource pack to be used during the trail, and a take home kit which consists of hands-on activities and an online platform to reinforce learning.
Our mentors has already set the first edition of the adventure trail with the theme on occupations and we had a chance to try out the adventure trail they set and get some inspiration from it.
Our mentors give us an idea of using a story plot to link everything up and make full use of the mascots in KidsSTOP™ to make it more interesting for kids.

We first started
We first started off by selecting a theme. We thought of different themes like super-hero, nature, animals, etc. In the end, we finally decide on the theme of global warming. Climate change is an issue and concern for many people. Hence, we hope through this program, we can raise awareness and let the kids learn more ways to protect the earth. Educating future generations hoping that our environment can become better in the future.
Next, we started to plan for activities for both on-site and take-home kit. We were glad that we have a chance to go for ground duty which is station at each exhibit and help the kids, interact with them. Through this, we were able to familiarise ourselves with the exhibits and know how to make full use of them. We then start to sort out all the exhibits that are related to our themes. At first, we had 5 activities, however, after meeting up with our mentor, we decided to cut down to 3 activities as kids have low concentration time. Hence, we arrive at three activities which aim to teach them on extinct animals, green-house gas (transportations) and the globe.
Our story plot is named as “Saving the Earth”, giving the kids a mission to find all three missing medicines. They will go to exhibits and then there will be a QR code given at each exhibit and they will need to answer the Google form to get hints for the next location for second medicine. It goes on like a treasure haunting until they find all three medicine. The three medicines are then their take-home kit.
In the first part of the adventure trail related to animals, the children are supposed to find the camouflage tree frog at the exhibit site. We then pasted a QR code near the exhibit for them to scan and answer the questions which only after that then they will get the second hint to the location of second medicine. At the same time, they unlocked their first medicine which is a DIY frog.
Next, we make use of the transportation exhibits around KidsSTOP™ and allow kids to learn about the releasing of greenhouse gas and it brings negative effects to the environment. We also tell them that bikes are a form of transportation supported as it does not release greenhouse gas. Then, they have to answer a google form again to get a hint of the last medicine. They then unlock their second medicine which is green bean. They will grow it and allow it to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
Lastly, we bring them to an exhibit of a huge globe and make them find Singapore. We also tell them some basic information on the recent Australia wildfire, hoping to raise awareness. They will then unlock the third medicine which is a paper globe that they have to make. Here, they have come to the end of the adventure trail and now will have to go home to complete an online worksheet that we create for them.
The worksheet is a website called Wizer and we create the worksheet for the kids to revise what they have learned in the trail, answer some simple and fun questions. We also insert the instructions on how to use the medicines in the Wizer worksheet.
That marks the end of our adventure trail.
Firstly, we learn to use online platforms like Google Forms, Wizer and Google Sites. We explored the different websites first and then proceed on to creating them for our users. We also made use of the QR code Monkey website to create the QR codes needed during the trail.
Next, as children are more visual, we made use of more pictures. However, we are unable to take all the pictures online, so we started doing our own graphic design. We drew all the pictures from scratch and made use of them throughout the adventure.
Lastly, we had a good time interacting with the kids, knowing what they like and what they will be interested in. Ground duty really helped us a lot. This is also the time that Si Yun and I took a break from office work.
1) Involving QR codes during our trail is on purpose as kids might not have phone or network, hence its also “forcing the parents to join them on the trail. Encouraging more parent-child interaction. All the knowledge on the Google form can also be explained further by the parents.
2) Whatever we planned on paper and computer in the office is all ideal situations. However, in reality, it might be different. Hence, after we planned to finish, we went on to test out all our take-home kits and adjust the difficulty level accordingly.
The most important takeaway for this journey is that we should never stop after planning a program. We should always take the next step to try them out on paper in order to know that it works. There will be a lot of troubles when we try them out in reality, but we should never give up and seek help if needed.
