  • Executive summary

I interned at the Singapore Science centre. For the first two weeks of my one-month internship at SCS, me and my group familiarized ourselves with the Young Scientist website, a website and platform designed and maintained entirely by Science Centre Singapore, and afterwards created short instructional videos for teachers to be able to become more accustomed to the website easily. For the rest of our time there, we were tasked with creating educational courses that were to be featured on the Young Scientist website itself for the students using the site. We created 3 different courses for the 3 different age groups that frequented the website.

  • Background information of the projects / tasks which you were involved in:

Our first project aimed to help less tech savvy teachers, be able to use the Young Scientist website with greater ease by having the instructional videos teach them how to use the website. The value of this project was to make the website easier to understand and more user friendly for teachers so that the fantastic resources available on the website were not left unused. The resources that were put into this project were the 4 of us interns and the website, we had to learn how to use the website ourselves before we were able to make the instructional videos. At the point we joined the project it had not yet begun and we were completely trusted to do it ourselves with guidance from our mentors when we needed it. For our second project, it aimed to educate students of 3 different age groups about the importance of sustainable development. The value of this project was to allow students of the different age groups to actively learn more about how the Young scientist for sustainable development programme works and why it was so important. The resources provided for this project were also only the 4 of us interns and access to the development site so that we were able to add them onto the official website. By the time we had joined the project it had not started at all and we were entrusted with completing it by ourselves with the support of our mentors.

  • Elaboration / record of the activities done:

Firstly, for our first project we spent the first few days familiarizing ourselves with the Young Scientist website and the Powtoons website that we would use to create the instructional videos. Afterwards, we made short screen recordings of specific actions that we planned to put into the instructional video so as to make the video easier to understand. Afterwards, we found a layout that we standardized for all of the 4 videos we made on the Powtoons website. We then created the video with no issues until we had to put the screen recordings into the video, which we could not do. However, with the help from our mentors we were able to figure out our mistake and add the clips successfully into the video, making our video that much more concise and easier to visualise for the teachers. For our second project, we were tasked with creating 3 different courses for 3 different age groups of students. Initially we had only made 1 course but after receiving comments from our mentors, we decided to make the 3 different age groups do 3 different but similar courses of relative difficulty. After creating the questions for all of the courses we had to go onto the development website so that we would be able to add the courses onto the Young Scientist website.

  • 3 content knowledge / skills learnt:

1. How to put myself into the shoes of others. I had to do this so that I could make a comprehensive video or course that would be useful for teachers or students respectively.

2. How to create an interesting video that would encapsulate audience while still making it educational. I had to ensure that the clips and facts i used were concise and also intriguing.

3. How to source useful information that is simple to understand. This was especially important for creating the courses for the students of the different age groups, since I could not give the students of the lower age group the same kind of information at the same level of complexity as the older age group.

  • 2 interesting aspects of your learning:

1. Understanding the user experience more thoroughly

2. Thinking ahead of schedule such that I can work more efficiently

  • 1 takeaway for life:

One takeaway that I think will stick with me for the rest of my life is the importance of carrying my own weight and still being able to help my fellow colleagues when they need help, while also still not being afraid to ask for help myself.
