Haylee Rippy presented this poster at the 2024 Festival of Scholars, showcasing our collaborative work, “Modeling Income Inequality: Exploring Transitions Between Quintiles Using Markov Chains.” This project, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Scott McKinley from Tulane University, uses Markov Chain models to investigate the likelihood of individuals transitioning between different income brackets, or quintiles. By constructing a transition matrix, we examined the probabilities associated with movement across income levels and identified conditions that could facilitate an individual’s progression from the lowest to the highest income quintile as efficiently as possible.
Haylee graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2024 with a B.S. in Mathematics. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she serves as a Teaching and Research Assistant.
Austin Teter presented this poster at the 2022 Festival of Scholars, showcasing our work, “Bee Colony Optimization for the Traveling Salesperson Problem: Finding an Optimal Tour Route to Explore New Orleans.” This project was led by me and Dr. Charles Burnette, from XULA, and investigates the use of Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) algorithms to identify optimal touring routes throughout New Orleans. Using Google Maps to calculate point-to-point distances, existing tour routes were modeled as a Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) and optimized using BCO techniques. The goal of this research is to develop an efficient approach for determining optimal routes for commercial tours by bus or on foot.

Austin went on to participate in numerous research projects with other Xavier University faculty members and graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics in 2025.
