Work-Based Learning
What is Work-Based Learning (WBL)?
Work-Based Learning (WBL) is an educational approach that integrates classroom learning with real-world work experiences. It provides students with opportunities to develop relevant skills in a workplace setting through work-based learning experiences, including business tours, job shadowing, internships, and short and long-term job training placements. Job coaches provide guidance and supervision, allowing students to gain practical experience, acquire new skills, and develop a deeper understanding of their career interests and preferences.
Ten key elements of Work-Based Learning:
Integration: WBL integrates classroom learning and workplace experiences, enabling students to see the relevance of what they learn in the classroom to real-world applications.
Authenticity: Work experiences reflect the tasks and challenges found in real-world settings, giving students a taste of the actual work environment.
Collaboration: Students collaborate with job coaches, employers, educators, and mentors, fostering partnerships between HSH and local businesses.
Reflection: WBL encourages students to reflect on their experiences, connecting what they have learned in the workplace with their prior knowledge and guiding personal development.
Skill development: Through hands-on work experiences, students have the opportunity to develop job-specific skills, as well as further develop transferable skills such as self-advocacy, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.
Career exploration: WBL allows students to explore different career options by engaging in hands-on experiences. They can gain insights into various careers, job roles, and work environments, helping them make informed career decisions.
Networking: Through work-based learning, students can establish connections that can open doors to future employment opportunities, mentorship, and continued education.
Confidence building: Through WBL experiences, students can gain confidence in their abilities and develop a sense of self-efficacy (belief in one's own ability to reach goals). They can learn to navigate work environments, adapt to challenges, and communicate more effectively.
Professionalism and workplace etiquette: WBL exposes students to workplace norms, expectations, and professional behavior. They can learn about punctuality, teamwork, communication skills, and other essential aspects of working in a professional setting.
Resume building: WBL experiences provide valuable content for students' resumes. Employers value work experience. WBL and volunteering can help students stand out during the job application process.
Our transition team of dedicated teachers and job coaches strive to help students make informed career choices, enhance their employability, and prepare for future competitive paid employment.
Benefits for Employers & WBL Participants
Employers benefit from WBL experiences by having access to skilled and motivated students who can contribute to their businesses or organizations. Additionally, WBL promotes collaboration between our youth & young adults, the HPS school district, and community and agency partners, fostering stronger connections, increasing opportunities, and improving outcomes for youth and young adults with disabilities.
