With graduation just around the corner, it is important that we reflect on some of the most important members of Melrose High School’s Class of 2022. This year, two of the most influential seniors have been the senior class presidents, who have worked hard all year to plan school events.
Following the format of last year’s Class of 2021, the Class of 2022 operated on a system of co-presidency. We interviewed their senior class presidents, Brigid McCarron and Drew Harrington, to get an insider’s view of this system. Sharing the presidency was “a positive experience,” said Drew. “Having two people leading the group really helped with staying on top of the workload and keeping the entire government engaged.”
However, a dual presidency was not the only out-of-the-ordinary experience for Melrose High School’s Class of 2022. With the COVID-19 pandemic cutting their sophomore year short, this class experienced only one “normal” year of high school. When asked how the senior class was affected by the pandemic, Brigid explained that it “presented some unique challenges,” but that it could also be seen as a positive because of the creativity and resilience that had to be implemented as a result. “We were able to make it a fun experience for our class given the cards we were dealt,” Drew added on.
Although their high school years have now come to an end, Drew and Brigid are only getting started with pursuing their futures. This fall, Drew will attend the University of Connecticut as a finance major, and Brigid will be studying computer science at Dartmouth College. “In the future I want to work in machine learning,” Brigid explained, continuing to say that she hoped to create virtual educational services for children with disabilities.
As these seniors are in the final stretch of their high school years, we asked them to look back and reflect on their individual experiences. Both Brigid and Drew agreed that their favorite memories at MHS were those spent with their friends and other people around them. “I've also made quite a few memories outside of the classroom,” Drew added, mentioning sporting events as some of his favorite memories outside of school.
When asked which piece of advice they would give the classes below them, both students advised others to take any opportunities they were given and try new things. Brigid elaborated on this by saying that “we are very fortunate to live in a community with so much available to us [...] If you find something you think you’ll care about, don’t be afraid to pursue it, even if it might not work out.” Although Brigid McCarron and Drew Harrington are moving forward to pursue their dreams, their hard work and dedication will not be forgotten by any MHS student lucky enough to have known them.
