Dr. Kinahan is a new teacher this year at Melrose High School teaching chemistry and environmental science. But her students know her as Dr. K. She grew up in a small town called Palmerstown in West Dublin, Ireland. Dr. K has always been fascinated by science and always knew she wanted to follow it as a career path. She specifically liked chemistry and understood it well, which led to her decision to work towards her masters degree and PhD in chemistry. After getting her PhD, moved to the United States with her boyfriend, now husband.
Before working at Melrose High School, Dr. K taught chemistry and physics at Everett High School. But before going into teaching, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a lab manager and worked with active ingredients in medicine. After working there for about 10 years, Dr. K decided to become a teacher. She has been a teacher ever since and loves her job, she explains that it is rewarding and super fun.
Outside of school, Dr. K played badminton competitively in Ireland but more socially here in the US. One of her proudest achievements is running a half marathon back in 2013 in honor of her sister and raising 6,000 dollars. She eventually became a teacher after moving to the United States and initially worked in Everett for a few years. Now she works here at Melrose High School and says, “I love it. I love the kids, I love the school, it's great.” She says the students are great and the teachers are wonderful. She says there is “lots of support” in the science department. We are all happy to have Dr. Kinahan as a new addition to our school.
