As the fall sports season comes to an end, we can take a look at this past season here at Melrose High. In Melrose, sports have always been a big part of the community and something that brings everyone together. High schoolers will always remember playing that certain sport of theirs with their closest friends from elementary school up until high school.
One of the most popular sports in Melrose is the football team. The traditions of playing Wakefield every Thanksgiving and going to the games on Friday nights, cheering the team on alongside the cheerleaders, will stick with most people forever. No matter how long ago you attended Melrose High, you will always remember the Friday night lights. This season, the Melrose High football team didn’t have the outcome that they expected, but that didn’t stop them from working together to defeat the teams that they did. This year the Melrose Football was ranked 117th in Massachusetts, 17th in division 4, and 124th in Boston. Unfortunately, they did not make the playoffs, but they will come back next season even better than before and continue to make Melrose proud.
Across the Football field and Lynn Fells, you can find the Knoll, where the Boys and Girls junior varsity soccer teams play. Back at the Fred Green field, you can find both the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams. This past season, the soccer games have become an event for the high schoolers to support both of their teams. You can find the high schoolers dressing up in different themes or writing their friend’s soccer number on their face. The soccer games this season have been so fun and the players love the energy that the home games bring. The girls’ team this season came out 9th in the Middlesex league, 17th in Division 2, and 163rd in Massachusetts. The boys’ team had a very successful season this year and is getting ready for playoffs. They are currently ranked 2nd in their division and 44th in Massachusetts. Their regular season ended with 11 wins, 4 losses, and a 3 win streak. Melrose High will be cheering them on along the way and wish them luck.
The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team has been dominating this season and as of now, they are currently 5th in their division with 18 wins and 2 losses. The volleyball team had a very successful comeback against Billerica to secure them a spot in the final four Divison 2 state championships. They will face Westborough who is #1 as of now in hopes of winning the semi-final game. The team has worked together to have a great season with the help of their powerhouse captains.
The cross country teams of Melrose both girls and boys have been chasing their way to the top. You can find these two teams making their way throughout the town. Girls cross country finished in 2nd place in the Division 2 State Meet with strong races from Jill Bakey, Lily Kavanaugh, Charlotte Tysal, Juliet Moore, Maizie Frakt, Isabel Vogel, and Kate Sikkema. Boys cross country finished in 4th place in the Division State meet with Will Dugan, Ellis Lurilli-Hough, and Ryan Cotugno finishing in the top 12. Both teams will now be heading to All States in hopes of taking home some wins there.
