This year’s Women’s swim team was one of the fastest in school history. In all, four school records were broken: The 200 medley relay, the 100 butterfly, the 100 breaststroke, and the 100 backstroke.
The 200 medley relay was broken at league finals by a team consisting of Sarah Longbrake (19) doing backstroke, Rachel Sapper (21) doing breaststroke, Erin Kluge (22) doing butterfly, and Kaiya Miller (20) doing freestyle. They finished with a time of 1:53.08, a full second off the record of 1:54.11 set in 2012.
Freshman Erin Kluge managed to break both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke records this year. Both of these records had been set in 2012 by Aubrey Bailey, who is the current coach of the JV boys swim team. Kluge’s butterfly time was a 57.21, beating the previous time by 1.11 seconds. She broke the 100 backstroke time at CIF finals, slipping past the record of 59.96 and getting a 58.85.
“It felt really good to finally break the records. I couldn’t stop smiling because I’ve been working really hard,” Kluge said. Next year, Kluge hopes to drop more time on her 100 butterfly and break the record in the 200 Individual Medley.
This season, Rachel Sapper broke the 100 breaststroke record a total of three times. She initially broke the previous record of 1:07.02 by almost a second at league finals. She then proceeded to break her own new record at CIF prelims, and then again at CIF finals. Sapper’s record is now 1:05.57, which placed fourth overall at CIF.
“My hard work paid off,” Sapper said, “my teammates were the actual best, they were all super supportive.” Sapper plans to train with a club team until next season to further improve her times and qualify for next year’s state championships.
