Bill SB-328 States No Middle Or High School Will Start Earlier Than 8:30
Violet Diaz, Staff WriterSleeping is precious and helps us learn. Without sleep we would be tired and feel dead. Recently a new bill was passed, called Pupil Attendance. Schools can no longer start earlier than 8:30 a.m. Some schools have already taken advantage of this law and start at 9:30 or 10. On the down side, students would be released later than usual, depending on the amount of classes the student has.
Scientist say that with students getting more sleep they will be more active in learning. Outcomes of students not getting enough sleep include risky behavior, performing poorly in school, being overweight, symptoms of depression, and unengaged in physical activity. Not getting enough sleep can put students in the worst moods too. “Teenagers aged 13 to 18 years should regularly sleep 8 to 10 hours per day for good health" according to the CDC.
Opinions on this news vary from good to bad. ¨I think this will be bad for the students with extracurricular to the point where they wouldn't have enough time,¨ said Cole Neal (21).
Sarah Alvarez(22) said, ¨It's gonna be even more cluttered with people getting out at the same time or starting at the same time
After the bill is finalized, schools will have 3 years before having to start at 8:30 or later. Schools are given more time so they can comply to the new bill. According to CDC, only 20% of 11-17 year olds get enough sleep and are healthy. The other 80% is kids and students not getting enough sleep. Sleep has a big impact on your life and although you may not get enough sleep it doesn't mean you have depression it's just one of the many symptoms for depression. It is proven that not getting enough sleep will change your mood, which I'm sure many of students have noticed.
Kara Nurse (21) said, ¨I'm not really worried about it since I probably won't be here in 3 years but if they cut the time short then I'm going to miss getting out early¨.
Other students say they aren't worried about the change since they are a Junior or Senior. If Granite complys within a year or two then Juniors will have a later start. It all depends on what grade you are in.
