Granite Hills is known for their IB and AP programs as well as their sports. There are many classes that students can take to complete their one-year requirement of an elective to graduate. Some of these options include Art, Photography, and Choir. Although to graduate we need electives, many students to have no clue on what type of options they have to choose from. It might be unclear what these classes will teach them, and what will be a good fit for them.
The first class students can take is Art 1. In this class, students learn and practice elements and principles of design. Throughout the year, they improve their art skills and analyze historical art pieces. This class is taught by Caralyn Hamilton during periods four, five and six. She has taught this class for ten years. Hamilton “always loved art from the time I could hold a crayon,” she says. To join this class, students don’t really need experience they only have to come in with an open and creative mind.
Photography is the next art class that can be taken by students. This class is about learning the basic outlines of taking pictures such as portraits, history of photography and still life photography. The teacher who teaches this class is Steve George and is taught during first, second, third, fourth, and sixth period.
A normal school day in this class can vary from working on a computer to edit their pictures to going out of the classroom and taking their pictures. George’s reason for teaching this class is to “help the students understand the meaning of what pictures say.”
One of the classes that students can choose from is Choir. This class has four types of choir classes: Beginning Choir, Bella Voice, Chamber Chorale, and Vocal Ensemble. Choir’s teacher is Janessa Nadeau who is teaching these classes in periods three, four, and five. Beginning Choir is third period, Chamber Chorale is fourth period and Women’s Choir is fifth period. For most of these classes, an audition is required, with the only exception being Beginning Choir.
There are many other classes that students can take but these are some of the popular art electives.
