~ Guitar Features and Choices ~

Things we considered before deciding on our solid top classical guitar

Depending on where you are, "white wood" can include hemlock, the true firs, and a few western pines. Or in hardwoods various poplars, cottonwoods, aspens and the like. On some less expensive guitars it is merely stated that the top of the body is either of “white wood” or plywood with a top of layer of “white wood”. It is then up to the maker to choose which white wood to use based on current wood prices and availability. This is not necessarily a bad thing for a less expensive guitar, but can lead to varied sounds between instruments of the same model. Choice depends on liking the sound of that guitar.

  • Do I need a plywood top or solid top?

Each has an advantage. A Plywood top is hardier and less prone to less than ideal humidity environments. A Solid top however has better resignation and stronger audio level than plywood and is usually the prefered sound.

Sizes such as full 4/4 Dreadnought, Classical, ⅞, ¾, ½ scales give an general idea of sizes compared to a dreadnought, but each manufacturer has their own take on a guitar shape and thus will affect the fit. In the end you will pick one that is comfortable for you to use.
