The two teams had faced each other on Sunday resulting in a Manchester United win in the league & plenty to talk about regarding refereeing decisions & VAR, now these two sides came up against each other again in the EFL Cup. West Ham were desperate for revenge after a late 89th minute winner from Jesse Lingard had given Manchester United the three points.
West Ham started the game well & quickly started to show Manchester United that they were not going to allow the game the same as it did on the previous Sunday. Both teams had heavily rotated but it was West Ham who struck early on with a Lanzini goal where Fredericks had played a cut back into the box for Lanzini whilst Donny Van De Beek had not followed or watched his markers positioning & had left his man open to receive & put the ball away.
Manchester United had the majority of the play with 61% of the ball & 27 shots, but only 6 on target (to West Ham’s 9 shots, 3 on target). Manchester United didn’t particularly play badly, but with the amount of changes & the early goal it was a hill to climb for the players that had been put in, the Referee was also called into question when Mark Noble appeared to pull on Jesse Lingard’s shirt & shorts but due to VAR not being present at the game, West Ham & Noble got away with it
Despite a lot of the ball, West Ham & Manchester United hitting the woodwork, it was West ham that came out on top & have progressed through into the next round of the cup at home to Manchester City. So although we are all gutted about going out of the cup on Wednesday evening, we’ll be hoping that David Moyes can cause an upset to Manchester City in the next round.
Manchester United face Aston Villa at Old Trafford where United fans will fully expect them to put the disappointment of Wednesday night behind them & keep their good form in the league going. Hopefully come 2:30pm on Saturday we’ll all be a little more cheery regarding football & United’s position in the league where they can potentially be top of the table after their game.
