About the Art:

The artworks here revisit early American paintings of sunrises or sunsets: I'm thinking about the Hudson River School’s engagement with the 'new dawn' of the American era and their influence within the project of Manifest Destiny. I bring those themes into the present day around the ambiguity of sunrises and sunsets (which is it that we’re looking at?), as the American experiment feels presently like it is sinking under duress. My versions of these paintings are made with watercolor on panel treated with absorbent ground. Styrofoam is applied to the surface of the painting while the paint is wet and removed after drying to leave a spongy distortion.
