For phase two, I started by organizing and drafting out what I was going to Raster, Score, and Cut. I wanted my design for my omni box to replicate an actual Toucan, so I looked up a picture and tried to replicate the smaller details to make my Toucan more realistic. For my Raster layer I used the pen tool to outline the beak of the toucan in illustrator and then filled the segments in with grey, and black so when they get rastered with the laser it will have an ombre effect. for my Score layer, I decided to score the eye, the foot, and the texture on the neck of the Toucan. Lastly for my cut layer I traced the outline of the Toucan's head, wing, and foot; so when the laser cuts it won't cut out the small detail in the Toucan.
For my Omni- Animal, I was inspired by a Toucan because of its intricate and colorful beak. After deciding on my animal, I drew out a sketch of my designed and then scanned it into Illustrator. In my Illustrator file, I broke up my toucan design into three layers: Score, raster, and cut. From there I chose what would be in these three layers, for my score layer I decided to score the eye, foot, and head of my toucan. In my next layer; the raster layer, I rastered details on the wings and the beak of the bird. For the beak of the Toucan, I used RGB black for the tip of the toucan and grey for the middle to get a gradient effect. Next in my cut layer used the pen tool to outline my drawing and then added my joinery to design. For my joinery, I used mylar hinges for the wings, and two custom hinges for the head and foot. For the head of my toucan, I used an offset hinge and connected it to the base of my toucan head, and for the foot of my toucan, I used a mortise and tenon joint. For the tenon, I made it much longer and added a small rectangle cut out on the foot so the the tenon could go from the inside of the box through the two custom slots in the box and the foot. After finishing my file I ran it through the laser cutter and came across a problem. The box file that I created in maker case and then customized to my toucan did not fit together, on my second attempt to alter my box and re-cut it, the pieces still did not fit. Ultimately, in the end, I had to re-make my box file on maker case to solve this problem. After having a successful box I started to assemble the toucan. Assembling my box was the most rewarding part of the process because seeing the design that I put together in my head come to life was amazing. I assembled my box with glue and used hardware to attach my hinges.
The Head of the toucan act as handle to open the box.
