On-board diagnostics
Most cars manufactured over the last 20 years have a computerbuilt in. This is also used to diagnose problems. The interface is called OBD (On-board diagnostics).

You will need an OBD2 connector. These are small devices (4.5cm by 2..5cm approx).
What you will also need is software to connect to the unit. The connection can be made via Bluetooth, wifi , USB and a serial port. Some free apps exist for mobile and PC to help. Once you have the two items you will need to find the odb2 socket.
Also cars have a way of running the diagnostics via a method using the dashboard dials and lights
