Updated version dated Nov 2017

You can make your own iPhone ringtones directly within iTunes 12.

You do not need any additional software to create the files.

Just follow these instructions, it’s not too difficult.

I have only tried this using an mp3 song but I suspect it will work for any music itunes can play.

I have done this with a W7, W8.1 and Windows10 should be similar on a MAC.

1) Select the tune you want to make into a ringtone and right click.

Choose the get info option from the list. This will show various information tabs.

2) Click on the Options tab.

3) Choose 30 seconds period of the song that you want to make a ringtone from.

Click OK when done.

4) Now select the same song and choose “Create AAC version” this will create a new song with the 30 second interval you specified.

If the “Create AAC version” is not an option probably because you choose to import to mp3 instead of AAC, you will need to change the import CD settings. If you had chosen to create mp3 songs then you will need to change this to Create AAC. You can always change it back later.

5) once you created the song you can find it in this folder on W7

C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music

username=your user name.

In this folder you will find the new file with a .m4a file type. You will need to change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r

That is the new ring tone.

If you cannot see the file extension type: From the folder select organize (top left) and select folder option. Then unselect "Hide extensions for known file types"

6) From itunes you can import the file:

From file menu "Add file to library" and select the .m4r file or you can import the whole folder if you have more than one file.

7) The file will show up in "tones" in iTunes

Now drag the file to the iPhone you want to transfer it to.

8) Sync your phone and the ringtone will be listed under custom ringtones.
