At the University of Northern Philippines' laboratory school, I recently worked with Class 10 Quirino, conducting two immersive and participatory sessions that focused on modals and phrasal modals. Students were expected to comprehend these grammatical ideas and be able to use them with assurance in regular conversation.
Day 1: Overview of Modals
In order to create a friendly and stimulating learning environment, the first session began with a self-introduction. To lay the groundwork for the day's lesson, I then quickly went over earlier grammar subjects, such as verbs and tenses. Students were asked to provide phrases from their everyday lives that naturally used modal verbs, like can, must, and might, in order to introduce the main topic, modals.
I included carefully chosen movie excerpts that illustrated the application of modals in real-world situations to support the theoretical explanations. Students were urged to identify the modals used and talk about their purposes following each film. This participatory method guaranteed active student engagement and made the lecture relatable.
Day 2: Introduction to Phrasal Modals
The second session built upon the concepts introduced in the first. A brief recap ensured students retained their understanding of modals before transitioning to phrasal modals, such as have to, ought to, and be able to. Multimedia clips illustrating the use of phrasal modals were utilized to provide practical examples and deepen comprehension.
To solidify understanding, I facilitated an activity where students performed skits that incorporated both modals and phrasal modals. These role-play scenarios simulated everyday situations, allowing students to apply the grammatical concepts in a conversational setting. The skits not only reinforced learning but also encouraged collaboration and creativity among the students.
Outcomes
This teaching approach effectively combined theoretical instruction, multimedia tools, and practical exercises to cater to different learning styles. By connecting grammar lessons to real-life contexts, the sessions fostered an engaging learning environment that promoted both comprehension and application of modals and phrasal modals.
